Q: Can this work for 180 degree turns? Or would the first chair get in the way?

yes it would turn the 180 degrees but the chair would get in the way. I use it to turn my wife 90 degrees

The assembly steps include mounting the leg support, mounting the pole to the main plate, and mounting the handle. Q: The knee pads will not slip over the bar to put together. There is a plastic tab holding the white part together. Am i supposed to remove it?

If I remember correctly, I did not remove the plastic tab. I did use a rubber mallet to lightly tap on the knee pad. Then it slipped right over. By the way, you are going to love this thing! Truly saved me and my back.
