Q: Do I have to completely clean the chain first?

YES! It is absolutely best to completely clean the chain before you apply the first coat. That will just make your life with this chain lube so much better. On a brand new chain, I start with soaking it in a jar of paint thinner or other harsh cleaner to get all the manufacturing paste out. Then I clean it with something like a citrus or (simple green) cleaner, wash it in water, let it dry a bit and then apply a coat, let it dry and apply another coat. PRO TIP - Always re-apply when needed AFTER a ride so the chain is always dry when you hit the roads.
