70 year old 1" steel main gas line between our home and the meter by the street recently began to leak. The run is about 30'.Got some estimates from local plumbers between $1800 and $5000.We have some plants and flagstones and water supply pipe to navigate so no "ditch witch" trencher rental would suffice, so I asked our gardener his fee to do the trench and put back soil and landscape and hardscape $600.PartsRiser Bent $70, Straight transition from PE pipe to steel pipe $40, 1" Pipe $66 and 2 x straight connectors $35, 50' if 14 gauge stranded wire for tracing $11, pipe dope...I ended up getting all through a local big box storeToolsPVC Cutter or pex cutter, permanent marker a couple of pipe wrenches Total ~$300 for parts and perhaps 3 hours to connect both ends... The pipe was hard to wrestle single-handed so my spouse and I wrestled to stretch out and get the pipe into the trench... I did a pex hot water re-pipe a few years ago and this 1" IPS gas pipe is much more rigid (= harder to work with) compared to pexTotal cost ~$900 and some sweat equityI noticed the printing on the riser and the straight steel transition is melted into the plastic not just printed, and I was concerned that this might create a leak as noted by others... Thankfully No leaks for this installationPoly gas pipe is supposed to last 50-100 years and the connectors are warranted for 1 year. I got some sand to cushion the pipe as a partial protection from rocks in the soil that reportedly could shorten the pipe's service life.
