The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection [DVD]

From the sublime to the ridiculous
This is a great box set with some brilliant movies and extras. The disc for Superman: the movie and Superman 2 are pure class; great films, great extras, the complete package. You also get the lovingly restored Richard Donner version of Superman 2; something every fan of the original movie will really enjoy (personally I loved it to pieces and look forward to watching it many more times). However the quality of the DVD extras goes down hill along with the quality of the movies: Eg. The commentary on Superman 3 is pretty ropey and the 4th film has very few extras. But these releases are still a big improvement over the vanilla disc that came out previously. The only real disappointment for me were the theatrical cuts of the movies themselves. Fans of campy classics like Superman 3 usually grow to love that type of film through repeated TV screenings. In this case the DVD cut of the film is a lot shorter then the TV version and feels a bit flat. However most of the cut scenes previously included on TV are on the disc as extras (in pan scan). Whilst it is nice to see Superman 3 & 4 with commentaries, these discs don't feel like the definitive version of these movies to me. But saying that these films are not as popular as the first two so it's unlikely we'll see better versions officially released. The other features (cartoons and black and white movie) are just filler. Their OK, but have very little to do with the Christopher Reeve movies. It's a lot cheaper to buy this box set then the special editions of the first two movies separately so it's well worth having. However, if you already have all the Supes' films from the previous DVD release the only essential addition to your collection is Richard Donner's Superman 2 which you can buy separately as part of the 3 disc DVD release of that movie.

Does The World Need Another Superman Box Set?
The amount of Box Sets collecting the four Superman films starring the indomitable Christopher Reeve as The Man Of Steel is ridiculus (There are what, 4 of them now or what?), but this here is the Ultimate Collection. You get definitive versions of each of the four films, a four disc version of the 1978 classic, 2 discs of it's brilliant sequel, Richard Donner's version of the said sequel, and wisely only one disc each for the lacklasture Superman III and IV: A Quest For Peace. Not only that, but the bonus features are terrific. The Four Disc of Superman include the Original Theatrical Version, the 2000 extended version, four documentries (including the vintage TV Special), the 1951 movie starring George Reeves (no relation), and, best of all, all Nine Fleischer Studios 1940's Cartoons. There are Four documentries for Superman II (both theatrical and Donner Cuts) and Eight Famous Studios Cartoons. Superman III has a Vintage TV Documentry, whilst all the terrible Superman IV has are deleted scenes. For Superman Devotee's only, if you feel you can live without the bonus features then buy The Complete Superman Collection:[4-Discs] [DVD] instead, it's alot cheaper. Of course, all this wouldn't be possible without Christopher Reeve, who (I know it's cliche, but I'm gonna say it anyway) Made Us Believe A Man Could Fly.Superman: The Movie 97/100Superman 2 84/100Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut 80/100 (Though you get the feeling if Donner was allowed to complete it, it could be better than the first...)Superman 3 69/100Superman IV: A Quest For Peace 57/100Extras: 10/10

Common Knowledge Parts 3 & 4 Sucked but...
This collection is a true reminder of how important this character was and is today in film.I bought this because I already had the 2 disc Superman Returns set.Having SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE (4 Disc), SUPERMAN II: DONNER CUT, SUPERMAN II (2 Disc), SUPERMAN III & SUPERMAN IV in one package is a Superman fan's wet dream. Each film for me has it's true benefits. The first Donner films are far superior than it's sequels for obvious reasons. They portray the character in it's truest form. Part III also had a place for me in that the 1hour behind the scenes documentary made up for the disgrace that was this 3rd in the series. The 4th and final film in the Reeves collection is just an oddity, a rare film that is amplified with the commentary. I had seen this 4th film only twice in my entire life and it remained a blur which I was thankful for. This made me apprehensive in re-visiting this film so I decided to watch this with the screenwriter's commentary and it softened the blow for me. I felt that Reeves reputation in the series was not all tarnished - his intentions for the film and core love for the character were expressed greatly and provided some redemption for the series. All in all... this is great collection and a must for any Superman fan or fan of that era.

LOVE THIS SET
It took me years after Christopher Reeve's horrible accident to watch his Superman movies again. It was too hard to see the way he was, knowing how his life had been so tragically changed. I can finally watch these again, and I just love them. The first movie is so delightful, so much fun to experience that you KNOW he can fly. The rest of them are also superb, funny, heart warming and just plain entertaining. They aren't "old" movies, they are timeless. Christopher Reeve was an extremely talented actor, producer and director, as he proved in his subsequent work. The Superman movies, however, are my favorites because they make you believe that good will always win over evil, and that escaping for a while into a movie that makes you want to have a Superman around when you need him isn't silly after all. Christopher Reeve's life was one of hard work, love, talent, and strength. These movies help us all celebrate his life.

Desastre
