Q: Does the zipper completely close the bag? Is it constructed to carry some weight for hauling extras with you or will strap rip from the weight?

I don't like this bag but yes the zipper does completely close the bag. Inside it doesn't have a zippered compartment, just a small open one that everything falls into the inside of the bag. The cell phone falls right out of the pocket on the strap, bummer!!

Q: Will a 2 1/2 inch binder fit with some notebook?

2 1/2 inch binder with a couple regular notebooks yes. My strap did break but I sewed it back together. I love this bag!!!
