The University of Chicago Spanish-English Dictionary, 6th Edition

I've been using various editions of the U Chicago dictionary for years. The compact size and light weight make the dictionary very convenient for carrying around along with whatever untranslated book I'm working on reading, and I especially like that I can hold both my book and this dictionary in one hand, back cover against front cover, at the same time for easy reference. It's like having a dictionary-appendix to my book. After reading other reviews I was worried about the font, but both the font and the dictionary itself are the same size as the 5th edition that I'm replacing, and I find the font comfortable to read. The one drawback of the U Chicago dictionaries is that due to the relatively inexpensive construction, they do eventually disintegrate after several years of use, but at this price point, you can simply pick up a new one when that happens. If the book were more solidly built, it would be much less convenient to carry.

I cannot say enough about this as a carry around dictionary. This is the second one I have purchased. I bought it because the other one was worn out and this is a new edition I have bigger dictionaries for use at home.and would be lost without this to take to class. This little gem has info that my Oceano and Barron's don't have. I really appreciate the verbs conjugations in the front and the various explanations and usage info with the words.

I had to get this book for my college Spanish class and I thought, "oh great, another book to take up space in my dorm till I can sell it off to another student." But the book had turned out to be a great help, very well laid out and easy to find the words I'm looking for. Will not be selling it off after the semester! Only downside is the text is a little small, wish they would have made the pages bigger and thus able to enlarge the text, but everything cant be perfect!

Had a version of this dictionary when I was in college back in the late sixties. When I started studying Spanish again I pulled out my old dictionary. It was as helpful now as it was then, but began falling apart (yeah, OLD!!). Anyway, went online looking for the same dictionary and found my old one had been updated many times, and this was the latest version. HALLELUJAH!!! Just as good as the old one, but updated. Would recommend.

Bought for my twin sons who are high school freshmen and taking Spanish for the first time. This dictionary was recommended by one of their teachers. Small lightweight paperback, easy to fit in their backpacks. They have good vision so the tiny print is not a problem for them.

I like the price and portable size of this dictionary. However, it is barely good enough for me to give away. The text is smaller than the nearest alternative that I have (Merriam-Webster's Spanish-English Dictionary, MSRP $6.99). It has less words and translations, but you can fill it the gaps by making assumptions or asking for help. I bought this book to give to someone, and I will include a magnifying glass. It's fine, especially if $5 USD or less, if you don't mind very small print.

わたしは、このシカゴ大学の編んだ辞書の前の版（２００２年）を持っています。本屋で数種の類書を比べて、いちばん良かったので買いました。今回の最新版（２０１２年）はアマゾンで広告を見て（発売セールで安かったこともあって）すぐ注文しました。期待をはるかに上回る充実ぶりで、感激しています。２０ページくらい増えていますが、厚さはほぼ同じか、ほんの少し薄くなっています。中身は、ギリギリまで余白を減らして文字を詰め込み――でも、改行の工夫で、前よりはるかに引きやすく、読みやすくなっています。今日のことば・文化を反映するように数千語増えているとのこと。ことに医療関係・コンピューター・スポーツの専門用語などが、とっても多くなりました。前の版では、人前で口にしてはいけないことばが非常に充実していたんですが、そこは大幅に割愛されました（ふつうに俗語と呼ばれるものの数は増えているようです）。前のほうがおもしろかったですが、全体的には今度のほうがいいに決まっていますね。いまいちばんよく使われている単語・熟語が選ばれ、その選び方、定義の簡潔・的確さに感服してしまいます。定義というよりは、そのことばを、別の言語ではどう言い換えるかという、訳語なんですね。近年はコンピューターのデータベースの膨大な情報量を分析することが発達しているので、編者たち（頭のいい、ことばの感覚抜群の人たちでしょうね）は、そのへんを最大限に活用しているのでしょう。現在のところ、ポケット版ではもっともすぐれたスペイン語～英語の辞書です。　なお、わたしはスペイン語を全面的に使う仕事をしています。日本語の辞書は、世界のスペイン語の流れから１０年ぐらいは遅れています。役に立たないので、持っていません。英和辞書は小型でも充実していますので、この辞書と併用しています。それ以上のことは、インターネット上の、スペイン語によるスペイン語辞典を読みます。

Lots of word explanations but no guide to how to pronounce the words. Would not recommend for learners in Spanish.
