Just... So.... Great....... It's like the luminary version of a multi-tool knife.
The legend itself; this is as close to it as it comes. Despite losing one of the much sought after, alkaline, D batteries, and only being a 6-Cell, this is a beast. If you're a illumination enthusiast, a guy who happens to like flashlights, a guy who gets paid to intimidate people, a guy who needs something reliable to ward off aggressors, or just a boy scout on an outing; this is what you want. This is what you need. This is what anyone who has "flashlight" in their mind, should be picturing, and it's soooo perfect. Also, you can slam it on both a cinder block, or solid brick, and both will break (not recommended, just saying from experience). Seeing where you're going at night, and self defense, combined with an excessively long battery life, are the reasons for a 5 star on this. (Psst... yeah you, reading this review. You probably already saw the tempered-glass lens replacement if you've seen this on Amazon, so go ahead and add that to your cart; talk about making something perfect better.

Impressive Length and Girth
What can I say of this 6D Maglite? It is basically a baseball bat with a lightbulb and batteries. It really is massive at nearly 20" long and weighs over 3 pounds. Not much fun to carry around for extended periods and doesn't swing as fast as the 4D Maglite. The best method to use is to place the light on your shoulder like a rocket launcher, letting the end of the light balance there. Rather cumbersome for inside the car usage. I honestly prefer the 4D to this but if you want the biggest, baddest bludgeon of a flashlight currently made, this is it. Good quality and while the incandescent lamps are rather fragile and the output is fairly unimpressive by today's standards, there are a ton of LED aftermarket upgrades like the Malkoff available to totally fix that.

Flashlight is an oldie but goodie
The old reliable Maglite 6 D Cell heavy duty flashlight has been around for many years. A wonderful yet inexpensive flashlight that has a very bright wide beam, can focus wide or narrow beams, is drop resistant, and can when called upon be used as a close in self defense weapon. This flashlight has been #1 with law enforcement and others for many years. Highly recommended. To make a great thing better, combine this light with a replacement LED bulb and a glass lens (both can be found for a modest price) and you have a flashlight that will compete with any LED light on market today.

Modern Day "Antique" or "Dinosour"
It's everything I expected. (I have the same thing in a two cell D battery model.) But don't be fooled, I bought this for the novelty of owning a brand new "antique." (136 lumens, 11 hours runtime requiring 6 D cells). If you want bright light and great battery life, I recommend Maglite ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight with 131 lumens and 79 hours battery time, requiring 3 D cells, or MAGLITE LED PRO 2D FLASHLIGHT with 274 lumens and 12 hours 45 minutes battery life, requiring 2 D cells. Also the Mag Instrument ML300L-S3016 with three brightness levels, 625 lumens on high, using 3 D cells, Runtime: High = 16 hrs; Low = 77 hrs; ECO = 117 hrs. There is a trade-off between brightness and battery life, and the newest LEDs increase both enormously. For the absolute most efficiency and brightness and compact size and light weight, look at flashlights that use Cree LEDs and Li-ion 18650 rechargeable batteries. These are available with a multitude of features and in various sizes and brightness levels. Check reviews for one that suites you.

switch cover didn't last through battery install
The switch cover almost immediately parted ways as soon as i took it out of the box. Cheap peace of junk...really expected better. Returning immediately, very disappointed. Apparently Maglite is just as quality now as most American new cars/trucks. Not at all. Last Maglite I buy. Had same one years ago, with I could go back in time and get THAT one. Never again.

the performance is pretty darn close to my M6 Guardian
I got this light with the Terralux(TM) TLE-310M-EX MiniStar31M-EX LED Conversion Kit for 4-6 D Cell MagLiteĀ®, as well as the X Cape Cap Maglite C or D Bezel Upgrade, and the Maglite D Cell Flashlight glass breaking Tail Cap X Cape Cap as a MUCH more affordable alternative option to my Surefire lights witch I own three of, including an M6 Guardian. At 1000 lumens, the performance is pretty darn close to my M6 Guardian, witch is at 1100-1200 lumens. The Terralux upgrade also has a low setting of 100 lumens, and a medium setting of 500 lumens, witch my M6 does not.The fact that parts and batteries are so much more readily available and much more affordable is the reason for this. $140 vs. $600 for my M6(yes, I said $600)............Surefire has discontinued the M6, by the way. Don't get me wrong, Surefire makes a GREAT product, but between the price differences and availability of critical things like......;..batteries, well............you make that call.

The Battleship of All Flashlights
This is my sixth 6-D Cell Maglite in my lifetime. I've used them for camping, power outages, walking at night, work and home repairs. The first four that I bought in the 1980s were one each for me and my three brothers and as far as I know, my borthers all have and use theirs. When mine was stolen in 1994, it was still working. The fifth one that I bought (my second) in 1994 was using it's original style bulb until 2005 when I replaced it with a TerraLux TLE-6EX LED bulb replacement kit, at the time a fantastic upgrade from the standard bulb. It was still working until recently when it was stolen. This time along with the Maglite, I bought and installed an HRQP 3 Watt LED bulb replacement kit and it's the brightest 6-D Maglite that I've owned. There are brighter LED kits available for this flashlight, but I don't need anything brighter than this. It's a bright, durable and reliable brute that will last for years, as long as someone doesn't steal it. It's my go-to flashlight.
