Howard Morgen's Solo Guitar: Insights, Arranging Techniques & Classic Jazz Standards (Jazz Masters Series)

This is one of very few resources on solo playing - most focus strictly on "chord melody" which is one approach but lacks in polyphony, bass lines, motion, etc. The great part is that Howard definitely understands this, and addresses many areas. The problem is that it may be too many areas. He spends a page or two on the concept, and then illustrates it with an example. There are some gems in here (e.g., chord fragments, and although I know harmony well, he does a very good job in sketching out many progressions and how they function), but you won't learn reharmonization, harmonics or bass lines in a comprehensive way in a few pages. Absolutely worthwhile, but I wish he was still with us for the next volume.

This is the best book that I have ever played from! Mr. Morgan was a genus when it come to explaining guitar material.I wish that I could have had this book 20 years ago. This is a must for a serious guitar player who wants to master thefingerboard on the guitar!

Having been a subscriber to Fingerstyle guitar player magazine (for 5 years), Howard's articles were the most clear and complete. This book is a continuation of that style.If you want to learn about intervals, chord substitution and jazz reharmonization techniques.This is it.

I studied with Howard Morgen 30+ years ago. He is one of the best teachers I've ever had (and I've had plenty). I recommend any book by him.

An excellent book to study as part of a library of jazz oriented self study works. You'll find yourself really understanding some basic concepts and playing better within a couple of weeks. I think the must be about 4-6 months of heavy work in this book alone.
