I've tried several forms of magnesium, including citrate, carbonate, oxide and oratate. None of the forms I tried had any affect. I have muscle twitches, tightness and trouble sleeping and had read several studies showing that magnesium appears to help with these issues, yet none of the forms I tried had any noticeable affect. Then I saw the Now aspartate form, but read many people saying not to use aspartate form because aspartate is an excitatory amino acid that overexcites brain cells. I almost didn't buy it after reading people putting the aspartate form on their "worst types of magnesium" list but since I had tried so many other types to now avail, I figured I'd just go ahead and try this form and boy am I glad I did! I opened two capsules and sprinkled them in my drink mix. I wanted to make a homemade electrolyte drink because these muscle cramps had gotten so bad, especially at night. I used the True Lemon Raspberry Lemonade powder packet because it has no artificial sweeteners or artificial colors, just stevia and 1 gram of sugar and is only 10 calories. I shook up it and it tasted great. I drank it right before bed and even before I finished the 16 ounce homemade electrolyte drink I could feel the muscles in my neck and shoulders relaxing, then I felt myself getting drowsy, then before I knew it I fell soundly asleep. I sleep through the entire night, which I haven't done in years. I usually toss and turn and wake up several times and have trouble both getting to sleep and staying asleep. I awoke refreshed, which also never happens. And I had zero leg, or foot cramps during the night, which hasn't happened in at least 5 years! Tonight as I sit here and type this I have made an electrolyte drink and am drinking it as I'm getting ready for bed and I can feel it working already. I can feel my muscles relaxing. I also had more energy today due to the magnesium I had last night. AND I also didn't have frequent urination. I normally wake up two or three times in the middle of the night to pee and I didn't wake up once! That was a totally unexpected benefit so I checked PubMed for some research studies and found that low magnesium can cause frequent urination. Wow. And for like the last 6 months I'd seen my doctor about frequent urination and all he did was try to get me to take some kind of pill to slow my bladder but I did not want to take medication, I wanted to find out what was causing the frequent urination and now I know! My magnesium was too low! I plan to drink this each night before bed (I hear that's the best time to take it if you have muscle cramps, stiffness, trouble sleeping etc). This form of magnesium has been a miracle already so I don't care what anyone says, the aspartate form is going on my BEST form of magnesium list! The proof is in the pudding! I've used the Now brand of products for over a decade and they haven't let me down yet! Their products always seem to work when others don't.!

There are similar choices (see below)--but one pill of Now Magnesium-Potasssium Aspartate delivers 150mg magnesium--almost as much as the best per-pill magnesium-only product (165mg)--and also includes 50mg chelated potassium (for cramps) and 50mg taurine (for brains). Caution: many magnesium product labels wrongly imply that chelate mg = magnesium mg OR include non-chelated magnesium oxide in the reported dosage. If you read carefully, the true dosage of magnesium is never more than about 165mg per-pill--as delivered by Twinlab's pure Magnesium Citrate capsules. Therefore, since potassium is also very important, might as well get magnesium-potassium rather than just plain magnesium. The following two other possibilities have a similar per-pill dosage of magnesium + potassium. Solaray Magnesium-Postassium asporotate. Pros: includes "orotates" which supposedly might have some extra benefits for keeping the arteries clear. If you have a visible problem with blocked arteries, then it might well be worthwhile to try this formula and to see if your results might be better than with the other formulas. However it is also possible that this is less effective since the potassium asportate seems less effective for cramps (explained below). Cons: a slightly larger pill--and no taurine included. Also, I personally find that 400mg per day of Solaray "potassium asporotate" is not very effective in preventing my muscle cramps. Whereas 200mg per day of either potassium citrate or potassium aspartate is effective against cramps--in my experience and also as reported in numerous Amazon reviews. This does not prove that the "magnesium asporotate" is less effective than "magnesium aspartate"--but it does call in to question the general level of activity of these "asporotates." Solaray also includes bromelain which is very beneficial--but I am taking chewable papaya pills which contain substantial bromelain as well. Enzymatic Therapy Krebs Magnesium-Potassium. Pros: if you suffer from fibromyalgia, this might be helpful because it includes magnesium malate. Cons: This is a large hard tablet that is thus harder to swallow and to digest than the capsules of the other two formulas above.

I've been taking these daily for about the past 4 years. Helps with muscle cramps/tightness. These don't cause any gastric system distress like some other magnesium supplements can.
