Thoroughly enjoyable
The statistical anomaly of too many jazz musicians dying after playing gigs concerns London constable and sorcerer’s apprentice Peter Grant. He’s a member of the Met’s smallest, and most secret division, one which deals with paranormal disturbances of the Queen’s peace. As he examines the corpse of Cyrus Wilkins, part-time jazz drummer and full-time accountant, the notes of an old jazz standard are rising from the body. This is a sign to Grant that something about the man’s death was not at all natural but instead supernatural. He has a personal connection to the case as well, since his father is a well-known jazz musician. This is such a fun series. It reminds me of a career path that one of the Hogwarts graduates might have taken. I like the balance of standard police work interspersed with paranormal elements like it’s the most natural thing in the world. The characters are diverse and well-drawn, the dialogue witty, the settings well described, and the crimes fascinating and believable.I’m pleased that there are several more to go in this series. I’ve already got the next one queued up on my Kindle.

Harry Potter for grown ups!
The contrast between realism and magic is really remarkable. Rooted in the topography of Soho, London -with its shops, clubs, street names and familiar sights, sounds and dryly observed glimpses of tourists, taxi drivers, bouncers and stairwells YET populated by vampires, faceless sorcerers and chimeras, our courageous London Met constable does his duty to protect the great British public. The plot moves apace, and the writing is terrific. It’s terrifying, macabre, tender and witty all at once - full of surprises. Also - I love Toby the dog! Can’t wait for the next in the series!

An extraordinary series
This is the second one in the series and it's better than the first. If you like a little bit of fantasy in a real world, this series will blow you mind. Soooooo love it

Excellent second novel in the series; an addictive read
An enjoyable read, one that hooked me from the start. This novel builds on the characters and circumstances of the first book in the series, but for me I found this book better flowing and a more fun read. I managed to finish the book in a relaxing weekend reading session, and kept the "one more page" hook that I love getting from well-written stories. I am looking forward to reading the next novel in the series! Well written, interesting, and a fun read.

Great!
Peter Grant, Nightingale and all the others are such great characters, and the story is funny, full of suspense and slightly unsettling... it is a great series.
