The Advent Storybook: 25 Bible Stories Showing Why Jesus Came

Wonderful for children and adults
The format of one page text and one page illustration is perfect for Advent. The words are as apt for children as they are for adults- difficult big concepts distilled into clear simple language. Love it and am ordering more for gifts.

Great idea, mediocre execution
I loved the idea of this book. We wanted to include a simple daily Advent ritual that would also help our 4 year old learn some of the stories of her faith. The concept here is great. The artwork is nice, the daily stories are just long enough, and the vocabulary is chosen for a young audience. What I don't like, and the reason that I'll be looking for a different book next year, is the curriculum. I can see what this first-time author was trying to do here, but it's not well executed. The writing was sometimes awkward. The stories, instead of being drawn from the events that lead up to the birth of Christ, are drawn from the Old Testament. The author is attempting to draw a story arc over salvation history, but she misses key events like the Immaculate Conception, the visit to Elizabeth, and the birth of John the Baptist. Instead she focuses on events from the five books of Moses, which is fine, but that's only a small part of the Bible, and it doesn't explain anything to a young child about the feast of Christmas itself. As we went on throughout Advent, the stories in this book did not relate to the feasts we were celebrating or the readings we heard at church. Overall it just didn't cover topics relevant to us. I would not recommend this book to Catholic families.A note about age appropriateness: Many of the stories in this book are too heavy for a 4-year old: Daniel and the lions' den, the near-sacrifice of Isaac, basically all of the story of Joseph, etc. I found myself editing the stories as I read them to avoid having to explain some of the really terrible activities in the Old Testament.

Doesn’t work with iPad/iPhone Kindle apps!!!
I bought the kindle version because we live overseas and the hard copy wasn’t an option for us. I honestly have no idea whether this is a great book or not, because it doesn’t work with The iPad or iPhone Kindle apps. I looked more closely and if you have an android phone or tablet it will work but for some reason Apple products are incompatible. I also would like my money back. I will try putting on my computer, but it’s not a great way to share the story with my kids.

New favorite advent book!
I love this book! It has a reading for each day of December that touches on stories and events from the Old Testament, leading up to the birth story of Jesus. I love that it brings out in each and every story something pointing to Jesus and why he came.I read the stories to my girls (ages 6, 5, and 2). It was a bit above a 2yo level, but the other girls listened and understood and we had some good conversations. I'll probably find a different book for next year to change it up a bit, but we will definitely be revisiting this gem again!

The best advent devotional we have found
We have about six different advent devotionals. Paul David Tripp, Sinclair Ferguson…. For our children: 4 and younger, this was perfect. Short (one page or less long), gospel-saturated (had us in awe of Christ everyday), theologically and biblically sound (which is rare these days) and well-written. We enjoyed it so much we also bought the Easter Storybook by the same authors. It was also very, very good. We love it and what it does for our family’s souls. This is probably going to be the last year we use it for our 4 year old (who has a large vocabulary) but we will come back to it for the youngest.

Lovely illustrations and language
I’ve purchased this book two or three times as gifts. It covers why the Messiah is needed all the way from the fall, through Messianic prophecies and God’s covenant with Abraham. It covers the need for the Messiah to be a sacrifice for our sins. It ends with the telling of His much anticipated coming as a baby. Each day is one page long. The illustrations are beautiful. The language is appropriate for a preschooler or young elementary-aged child, but can always be abridged for more wiggly listeners. It’s meant to be read by an adult to a young child, as the reading level is not for beginners.

Beautiful book, but disagree with the target age
I will caveat this by saying I'm not very religious. However, I did grow up in a very religious household, and I do still take my kids to church and want to teach them about the non-commercial side of Christmas. My kids are (almost) 3 and (just turned) 5. I was hoping this book would be perfect book to balance out our Lego Advent (commercial side) of Christmas countdown. The book is a great format in that each day there is a beautiful illustration, a sentence verse from the Bible, and a story that takes only few minutes or so to read.My issue is the story itself often contains a verse from the Bible. This breaks up the story-telling of the story for children as young of mine that aren't quite ready to comprehend Biblical language/verses. Of course this is easy to skip over. My bigger issue is that some of the stories and images I find are scary for younger kids - ie. illustration of whip/slavery and story on slavery, killing lamb of sacrifice with illustration of sad lamb on leash, , and story of King Nebuchadnezzar and talking about killing ppl with fire, etc. I know these are all important stories from the Bible, but I'm not quite ready to expose my children to some of these stories and images. I don't think being naive to this at ages 3 and 5 is a bad thing; they have plenty of years left to know about the dark side of mankind. At this age, I also still want this season to be filled with wonder and happiness not scare them with stories of being killed by fire, slavery, etc (again, they still have plenty of years for that). I would recommend this book for quick, nightly Advent reading to kids 8-12+.

Great Pictures, Re-useable & Fun
Loved using this for our Christmas Season Advent. Great for kids of all ages! My kids 6-11 all took turns reading on their night and for the most part it was easy to read and understand. Will be using this yearly for our family advent. Thanks so much for this! Definitely recommend.
