This gorgeous ultra-floriferous CA native Aster was selected by Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens for its deeper, prettier purple 1” blooms and its taller (2-3’), airier form making it as showy as it is TOUGH. Blooms from late Summer thru Winter – its flowers bringing sumptuous color to the garden and much needed food for butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects. Since it can tolerate almost any soil, including clay, it is perfect for a sidewalk strip, hillside planting, dry, or native garden. Spreads by rhizomes for superior erosion control, filling in a large areas quickly – but not aggressively. Its spread can also be dramatically slowed by less watering or even completely contained by root barriers. As a coastal native, naturally it can tolerate coastal conditions! Semi-evergreen to deciduous.
