I love Michael Whelan's art work on some of my books. I bought this so I could look at the pictures without pulling out my books.

Great art book!

They don't make 'em like this anymore

If you like Whelan's artwork; you will love this book. As has been mentioned before, it has the John Carter of Mars, Lovecraft, Foundation, Dragonriders of Pern covers and many more. It does not contain the Elric covers.

Following his first art book "Wonderworks", which covers the 1970's, comes "Works of Wonder", spanning the artist's beautiful renderings from the 1980's.I just have one complaint about this one: too much wasted space. Published in the ascendency of Michael Whelan's domination of the professional artist category of the Hugos, this book is a joy. Lovingly produced with a definite "art book" feel, the book has heft. The art itself brings back memories: Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series, Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders (more illustrations than Wonderworks had), Isaac Asimov's Elijah Baley and Foundation series, the Del Rey Lovecraft covers, and Edgar Rice Burrough's Martian series. The descriptive text adds a "behind the scenes" look at the art, from how it was composed to symbolic elements in the art. A truly delightful addition to my science fiction/fantasy art collection.
