Saul Leiter: Early Black and White Hardcover – October 31, 2009

An excellent book, very well presented. My only complaint is that the slip-cover is quite thin, considering the weight of the two volumes, and I'm afraid it might rip. However, the books themselves are very sturdy and the print quality is good.

Wonderful early photographs by a genius of New York street photography, gentle, innovative, moving pictures. I don't know why he didn't get recognized earlier in his career. His work is of the highest calibre along with the other great street photographers of the 50's. I'm glad he is finally getting published. His early color is also worth looking at.

Fantastic book!! The presentation of his images (all B&W of course) is fabulous, instills so much admiration for this artist - he's one of my all time favorite street photographers!!

Excellent collection of Saul's early black and white, demonstrates that his artistic vision was there from the beginning. A must have for anyone who enjoys his work.

Worth every penny. This is a two volume set of Saul Leiter's early black and white work that is a must in everyone's library.

Beautiful work. Includes two books: Interior and exterior. Regard Saul Leitner as one of the best photographers of the twentieth century. Combined with Early Works - Colour, you have a decisive collection of Saul’s genius.

Ho avuto il piacere, di conoscere parte dell'Opera, a Parigi, in una mostra. Sin da subito mi sono messo alla ricerca di libri e di immagini, ma anche di parole scritte o pensate per le sue fotografie. Mi meraviglio come una persone della sua sensibilità, possa essere stata trascurata per buona parte della sua vita. Quando morì circa un anno fa, nessun quotidiano o notiziario diede la notizia, in Italia.Questi volumi assieme ad altri relativi alla Sua Opera, dovrebbero essere promossi come necessari, in ogni biblioteca domestica e non.I due volumi raccolgono immagini, che arrivano al cuore, e non solo.Grande Autore.

I have enjoyed Saul Leiter's colour work for a few years now and I have been highly anticipating this release. The two books are beautifully presented and printed. The images show the work of a photographer at the start of a photographic life and you can see how his style develops through time.The first book covers photographs of friends and family, some of the portraits are truly outstanding, his use of reflections and out of focus areas masking parts of the scene are amazing and look contemporary and original. His use of composition and light is amazing. The second book is mainly based around street photography, here you can see the use of reflections, strong contrast and shadows, the style of photography so magnificently shown in his colour work is here in black and white. There is a wide range of styles shown, some of which work better than others but taken as whole the two book series shows off Saul Leiter to his best.The first book is my favourite of the 2, the portraits and nudes show Leiter in a different light and this work is very different to his colour work, in fact I feel the first book has now become my favourite of all of Leiters books and is worth the admission fee on its own.
