Truly The BEST
We have an 80lb Rottie who is 7-8 yrs old. We recently rescued our Girl and was not aware if she would chew or try to get into her food. She does none of that But this container is great...There is no dog food smell...It is very airtight and keeps the food fresh...The larger (storage) lid does not come off when tipped over (we tested it)... It is tall and slender for easy storage unlike the other ones that look like Rubbermaid containers..It does hold a little more than 40 lbs but that depends on kibble size. (We feed our girl Nutro Natural Choice regular size kibble and small bites mixed and it hold a little less than 55 lbs)The only very small issue is that the daily access lid is hard to get off sometimes since it so good. I did not count it as a negative since I prefer a tighter lid than loose. It has grips to help turn it.Love this product!!!!!!!April W. Phoenixville, PA

Absolutely wonder!!!
Absolutely Wonderful!!! Definately recoomend. I have 3 very large rescue dogs (all of differnt breeds and age ranges from 9 months to 12 years. I buy 3 different types of large breed dog food each month to support each dog's nutritional needs. Having 3 elevated feeding stands and 3 rectangular food bins. (I used the plastic "storage and moving bins" before") there was barely enough room in the dining room for dogs stuff and a small kitchen size table. I just purchased 1 of these and it takes of less than half the floor space of 1 of the plastic bins I used to use. I bought a 30lbs bag of science diet sensative skin dog food and it only filled this container about 3/4 full. I will be ordering 2 more of these and then actually have twice as much free space in the living roo. Lid is easy to open but keeps a tight seal and pleanty wide to get a measuring cup in and out easily.

Pleasantly surprised by quality
Considering the prices of other pet food storage bins on Amazon, I was quite pleasantly surprised with the Vittles Vault II when it arrived. It's not cheap plastic, as I had feared it might be. It's sturdy and appears to be the type that will last, with reasonable care. The lid is easy to use, though a raised handle would have been a little easier to grip than the recessed one is. The only immediate complaint I had was an INTENSE "new plastic" odor when I took the lid off for the first time. But a couple of days sitting in direct sunlight took care of that problem. As for capacity, I must echo others who challenge its true size. I just poured a 30-pound bag of Blue Buffalo dog food into mine, and I had some room to spare. However, I don't know if another 10 pounds would fit; it doesn't look likely that there's enough room left over for that much more, and Blue Buffalo is a medium-sized kibble. Perhaps if you settled the contents a couple of times when filling, 40 pounds would fit, but most certainly no more.UPDATE: It is now June 18, 2012, a year after my initial review. We've not had one instance of bugs in the dog food, and I couldn't be happier with this container aside from my earlier comments about capacity. We can clearly see the level of food from the outside, and it's easy enough for our 5-year-old to open and close the lid properly. A couple of times the sealing ring has fallen off, but it goes right back on, and in no way would I call it a frequent occurrence. It doesn't take up a monstrous amount of horizontal space in the closet, and it's short enough that you can hang normal-length coats above it with little trouble (you will have to move them aside to get into it, though). I would most certainly buy this again. In fact, I think I might check to see if there is a smaller version for our cats' food ...

Warning
The amazon packaging does not protect the item inside. Both times it was shipped the plastic body of the item was shattered. The first time, the corner of the body was shattered. The last time, it was a spider-webbing shatter on the bottom. I decided to live with it, as I am tired of missing work to return an item with the fedex guy (okay, I was working from home, but still...). I think the problem is that the item is not fully ensconsed in the protective packaging material, which is itself insufficient as it is simply brown paper. Crumpled brown paper, that does not wrap the item but only fills the empty space in the over-sized box.The item itself does not have packaging, except for a single paper sticker that is attached to the item with a ridiculously strong adhesive. I spent 30 minutes and a bunch of Goo Gone to remove it. The manufacturer needs to change that label or adhesive. My hands are sticky and my fingernail bed is raw.Hopefully the vittles vault proves me wrong and is good for us for years to come. So far, I can say it fits the 40 pound bag of Iams dog food (large chunks). I have to review it one star because the over all experience so far has been horrible.Edit October 2012:I have been using this product now for a long time and will say the bit of broken plastic is not missed (though the first on shipped was badly broken)... Anyways, this really is a great dog food holder and I am very happy to have it and to keep my dog food looking organized and secure. Great product, and I have updated my star rating to match.

Screw on lids crap now!
I have one of these from about 3.5 yrs ago. Love it works great. This vittles vault I just received is fine except for the screw on lid. It does not fit tight. It seems like it is too small and will strip out. I bought a 30lb one a few weeks ago and have the same problem with that one too.The lid on my original one from 3 yrs ago is clear and has a lip with the gasket. It screws on nice and tight. The 2 new ones I have, it's a grey lid that screws into the top and does not seem like it's sealing. I'm just disappointed in how cheap the lids have gotten. Would be a 5 star product if the lids sealed properly. The whole point of this product is to have an air tight seal. Definitely not air tight with cheap I'll fitting lids.Picture with clear lid is the correct lid that fit properly from the one I bought years ago. Grey lid is the new one I got and it junk, doesn't seal well, and seems stripped out.
