They are unnecessary, and interrupt the flow of your reading
The type is too small. Also, the author puts in thousands of brackets with "A" and "B" to tell you what his source was. They are unnecessary, and interrupt the flow of your reading. I found the above features to be annoying and distracting. The essays are worthwhile.

Montaigne is writer for this age, too
What this extremely modern writer had to say -- and how he said it -- is extremely modern and very much speaks to our times.

Great paired with "How To Live"
Wanting to read Montaigne after reading the excellent "How To Live" I found this selection of essays to be the perfect compliment to that book.

A remarkably clear and honest account by an intelligent author
These essays by a french author of the minor nobility are beautifully written. The author relates his most intimate thoughts and experiences in a quite remarkably readable way.
