My brainiac husband loves this book
I don’t play Bridge, I’ll probably never play Bridge (because it’s much too serious a game for me and I’m more of a Euchre kind of girl), but my brainiac husband plays and wanted this book. He described it as like the “Bible of Bridge,” so I bought it for him. He reads it, studies it, and ponders it, which I guess is what good Bridge players do. Anyway he proclaimed it good, so it must be true because he’s quite particular.

Excellent reference for all levels!
My boyfriend has been a Bridge player for seven years. I'm relatively new to the game. We both love this book. It breaks down each convention as well as giving details on defense, responses, and re-bids. While many Bridge books cover the conventions of Bridge, very few go into this much detail on what to do *after* you bid the convention. Also, Root is an excellent writer for beginners/novices. He breaks things down simply. The ratings on each convention help you know which ones are easily mastered. This is also a terrific reference tome to keep handy for online games. If someone says they play a certain convention, you can look it up quickly using the index. The glossary includes definitions of basic Bridge terms as well as variations of the conventions described.

Very useful book for modern bridge conventions
This is an excellent guide for modern bridge. Or I should say good guidelines. I personally prefer to have a minimum of 16 points for 1 NT opener, and 21-22 for 2NT opener. This of course has to be a partnership agreement. The book is written for the users to easily understand the conventions and includes many examples. I recommend its use for teaching basic and intermediate bridge, limiting the conventions to the most commonly used. I presented a copy ofthis book to several bridge friends who are now using all the basic Standard American conventions and more. It is a great asset for all the bridge players.

Really helpful and clearly explained
This book is a master at teaching people Bridge. I am just learning - while my friends have played for years - and, with the help of this book, I have been able to pick it up rather quickly. I especially like that they have broken down the conventions into 1-star, 2-star and 3-star ratings, so that it is easy to see where beginners should start. Really great for anyone just starting out in learning bridge.

A must for your bookshelf
Gold Life Masters in our bridge club recommended this book to me. Although it's a little dated, it covers most modern conventions and provide detailed guidelines for use along with examples. I find that most bridge players use the basic information, but it seems most have differing views about the intricate details ... they differ with the book and with each other :)

Classic Reference
This is a very thorough treatment of many of the most important bridge conventions and can serve as a standard reference. As an example, "new-minor-forcing" is given 5 1/2 pages of attention, containing 29 example hands. This is one of the books that frequent tournament partners both might want to own. The book is 2 1/2 decades old and is missing things that have become popular in that time -- e.g. Capelletti, Bergen Raises, Two-over-one.

Great book on conventions for beginners
When learning to play bridge you soon realize that there are several conventions that you would like to learn. This is probably one of the best basic books on the topic available. You will need to complement it with more advanced books as you learn the game. However, it is probably one of the best starts you can get.Anders Hansson, author of Introductory Duplicate Bridge

Comprehensive description of most bidding systems
This is a clear and well organized compilation of just about every bridge convention in existence. After you've read Sheinwold's six weeks to winning bridge, this book makes it easy for you and your partner to pick and choose how to tweak your bidding.

Very boringly presented
The book I received, though in good condition, was printed in 1981 and does not have a user-friendly or appealing layout. There is no use of colour for the suits, there are no practice hands and the conventions are bunched one after another. I spent 15 minutes flicking through it, didn't find McKendrick or Jacoby 2NT and gave it away to the dustmen. I'm a bridge teacher and found the presentation profoundly boring

Four Stars
A good basic book for common conventions.
