Where do I get one of those necklaces?
The Necklace was a read I wasn't prepared to like. However, I found myself finishing the book in one sitting. The concept was brillant...a bunch of women get together to purchase a diamond necklace none of them could afford alone. But the reason was so different. It wasn't just to grace their necks, but to bring a group of women together for friendship and more.Yes, the writing is oftentime cloying and sickly sweet. Every one of the women is beautiful, graceful, yada yada...but if you get past that you find pearls of wisdom in the book.It is an example of what happens when women work together. Gone is being catty, competitive, and nails being bared. Instead, these women find a harmony with the good and bad of each coming forth and either learning or growing through this endeavor. It's a quick read and if you get past the pollyana type writing you may see things about yourself in here. I did.Pick it up, us women should strive to create groups like this that feature helping others and sharing as the mantra. Imagine what we could do.

Good story. Quick read. Not life changing.
Good true story.I liked the author's final chapter much better than all of the others. It's worth reading if you already have it on hand. I wouldn't go out of my way to get it.I read it for a book group. We all liked the storyline a bit but questioned how feasible this would be in small town America. If nothing else, this led to a good discussion about luxury, self indulgence, self esteem, gender choices, group dynamics and relationships. As most people in the book group I attended are frequent volunteers with other organizations we wondered about the true effect of "Jewelia" on nonprofit endeavors. If the group truly wanted to change lives or make a difference in the greater community additional efforts could have been shown in the book. The Necklace was a good study in group dynamics and shifts from personal to group agendas. Although nonfiction it reads like light summer reading. It was a tough story to tell from so many different people's perspectives. A bit more editing would have helped. Even so, I enjoyed it.

An "A" for Originality
I'm always looking for something original to read. There are a million similar books and finding one that stands out is what interests me. I enjoyed reading about the different women and the travels of the diamond necklace they shared. A fun and sometimes thought provoking book. If you are a woman who enjoys beautiful jewelry this is a must read. If you are a woman who enjoys other women and community service this is a viable read that may inspire you to create your own ideas for a service minded group. I love being with other women. Being with them offers a net of love and safety and it always inspires and gives more than I ever imagined it would. To the women of Jewelia thank you for your story.

An Experiment that Succeeded beyond its Goals!
Not only did I find the premise of what these women decided to do intriguing but how it all turned out. Loved the picture of each woman as it was her turn and learning how wearing the necklace affected each one. PLUS the fabulous outcome (unexpected) and generosity that resulted in the end...and perhaps ongoing. Shows you how well something so perhaps seemingly selfish didn't turn out that way at all.

Good read, looking for more...
This book was hard to buy in the local bookstore, so I ordered on Amazon. I thought it must be a "hot read" because it was not available in town and the Ellen Degeneres show had a brief discussion on the story. Amazing little story, could have been a better "read" if only written in a different perspective. I think the way the author broke down each woman per chapter was elementary, at best. I think the women had a unique concept. Wish the book could have been better written or perhaps written by one of the women. It fell short for me.

My Second Reading
I was just as interested in getting to know these women this time as I was last time. I could see myself as Jonell so many times and hope I could learn and grow as she did. There are so many aspects to this whole endeavour that I wouldn't have thought of, but will certainly be more aware of in the future. I'll be leading a book group discussion on this book in a couple weeks and I can't wait to hear their thoughts and comments!

Worth Your Time and Money - An Inspiration and Much More
This was by far one of the best books I've read in years. This is so much than a story, (in fact it's a collection of true stories), but beyond that, it was about more than a piece of jewelry, it was a set of life lessons and a lesson in inspiration. I have always felt that each of my jewelry pieces tell a story but in this case one piece of jewelry told hundreds of stories and has inspired a continuation of this experiment. It is not an inexpensive book, but even if it were double the price it would be be worth it. I usually read "fluff" to get a time-out from life but when you get away from it all without leaving the real world it is worth it at almost any price. Just read it.

An extraordinary idea. Wonderful!
An extraordinary idea of women clubbing together to buy a diamond necklace, and sharing its' use. The effect on each woman, and her story...and then how it develops in an unexpected and wonderful way to benefit their community. An uplifting and life-affirming read.
