This book is a collection of hundreds of family photographs of the Kennedy first family (mostly JFK, Jackie, Caroline and John) taken at the White House and family homes over the course of Kennedy's presidency. The photos in this book really are riveting. They have some kind of quality to them. It was as if John Kennedy knew somehow that he was living a life that would turn into mythology and he played it for all he could. In some, the Kennedy family could be any family. In others, their regalness and star quality was obvious. In this day and age of the deafening, mind-numbingly crushing blare of constant media and information assault, these photos seem quiet; like a breezy summer afternoon punctuated only by the sound of a distance lawnmower. It's also funny seeing photos and home movies of a very pregnant first lady smoking and the first children riding standing up in the front seat of a convertible. How did we manage before the government ran our lives? Kennedy fan or not, this book is more than a collection of staged photos. It's an invitation for even the most cynical of us, to come and believe in Camelot.

I was sixteen when JFK was assasinated. Prior to that I was caught up in what Iconsidered the heady excitement of a new, young leadership. I was devastated by thebrutal death. I wept, I mourned the loss of "what might have been".For years, regardless of the negatism that emerged surrounding the Kennedy Mystigue - like so many who lived thru that dark time - a kind of pertpetual, subliminal sadness remained in my heart.Now, so many years older, and I would like to think, so much more pragmatic and wiser,I find myself still addicted to that incredibly short period of time. We know what the outcome was, but will never know what it could have been. The mystiguecontinues to reel me in.This book is a magnificent - and magnificently photographed record - of a time ofyouth that will never grow old. And promise that will never be full-filled.It is a wonderful tribute to the subject and the photographer.

I was 20 yrs.old when Pres. Kennedy was assassinated. When word came out of the shooting in Tx., the rest of day was silent wherever you went. I had to attend an Irish wedding the next day & all through the reception, it wasn't as joyful as a wedding would normally be. The bridal couple were Irish themselves, so they spent their honeymoon glued to the TV all that wk-end up to the last day of the funeral. I did likewise. They were fascinated with this Irish family as so many of the American people were. I loved the book. They were definitely the only Presidential couple whom you could call "Camelot." I have purchased many books on the Kennedy & just loved reading & seeing all the pictures of that era as I can relate so much to the writings & pictures taken back at that time period. I definitely thought it was a 5 star book.

Having grown up during these times, I wanted to refresh my memories. These photos took me back to a time when America could do anything it set its collective mind to. It may not have been the greatest presidency, but it certainly was one of the more noble ones. If you enjoy history, and want to see some great images form the Kennedy era, this is it.I have accumulated many books over the years, mostly dealing with the assasination,but there were relatively few books that just covered the times from his public office. The quality of the book is great, the majority of photos are sharp and clear, and in color. Something that back then I rarely saw. Newsprint and TV were black & white predominately.

For those seeking a full-bodied collection of images of the Kennedy years, I believe you will enjoy this collection. It comes with a DVD of some short movies; the only disappointment was there is no voice -- just a musical accompaniment, but regardless, it's a lovely bonus. The images are crisp, many I'd never seen before -- moderate amount of text -- a nice balance. If you're a child of this era, like me, I think you'll enjoy it.

Wonderful big photo book and DVD included. The binding was a little broken but tape fixed it. I knew it was used. No complaints about it. VERY nice color photos of JFK & family.

This is the best purchase I have ever made! My mother loves anything to do with the Kennedy's. She was thrilled!! This was part of her Christmas present and she loves it! She watched the DVD the same day she got it and can't say enough about it! Thank you for such a wonderful gift!!!

I have already bought a lot of books on JFK but this is one of the best, many pictures in black and white and in colour, many I have never seen, The DVD played on my region 2 player and here too many unseen films, a must for Kennedy's fans.

Brilliant book, lots of pictures too. The DVD included gives rare footage of the Kennedy family in their homes during private times. Makes you feel like part of the family when you watch it. This is a MUST for any Kennedy fan. You won't be disappointed with this book.

Zuerst:die schiere Fülle an Bildern in diesem Buch hat mich beinahe erschlagen-dazu sind sie fast alle gestochen scharf,und viele,die ich nur in Schwarz-weiß kannte,sind eigentlich Farbaufnahmen.Diese in Großformat,und "Technicolorbunt" zu sehen,war für mich echtumwerfend.Ich könnte stundenlang in diesem Buch blättern,und tue das auch mitunter.Es ist,als wenn man durch eine Glasscheibe einen Blick in die Vergangenheit tut.Was mich auch verblüfft hat:wie viele der wirklich weltberühmten Aufnahmen,die jeder kennt,und diedeshalb auch im Buch sind,tatsächlich von Cecil Stoughton sind.Sei es die berühmte Aufnahme vom kleinen John,der mit den Perlen seiner Mutter spielt,oder das Bild,das JFK zeigt,wie er in die Raumfahrtkapsel schaut,und viele,viele mehr-sie sind alle in diesem Buch,und in wirklich ausgezeichneter Qualität(auch Buchbinderisch einwandfrei:dickes Papier,Fadenheftung,Schutzumschlag).Wenn sie die Bilder der Kennedy-Präsidentschaft suchen,und wirklich mal alles gebündelthaben wollen-dies ist ihr Buch.Auch schön:sie sind chronologisch geordnet,und zeigen auch wirklich oft JFKbei Arbeitsterminen.Die Familie kommt natürlich auch vor,aber angenehmerweise nicht so Jackie-lastig wie das inanderen Bildbänden oft ist.Sehr bewegend:zu sehen,das er 10 tage vor dem Attentat noch auf dem Friedhof Arlingtonwar,auf dem er 14 tage nach dem Foto ja begraben wurde.Das so zu sehen,finde ich richtig beklemmend.-Jetzt bin ich so begeistert,und vergebe trotzdem nur 4 Sterne.Warum?Dieses Buch führt als Co-Autor einen Harvey Sawler auf,der "Cecil Stoughton vor dessen Tod extensiv interviewthat"- verwunderlich,das es dann trotzdem nur für 2 (zwei!!! von 360!!!) Seiten über den Photographengereicht hat.Da hätte mich wirklich vieles interessiert:wie sind verschiedene Aufnahmen zustande gekommen,wie hat er die Bildauswahl getroffen,inwiefern hat die Firstfamily bei dieser mitgewirkt(wenn überhaupt) usw.Es findet sich absolut nichts darüber,was ich schade finde.Und dafür,das es ja ausschließlich Stoughtons ikonenhafte Bilder sind,die in diesem Buch enthalten sind,istseine Namensnennung auf dem Cover,wie ich finde,etwas arg klein ausgefallen.Trotzdem großartiges Buch,das ein absolutes Muß für jede Kennedy Sammlung darstellt.Kennedys Amtszeit in Bildern,quasi.Es ist übrigens verblüffend,heutzutage zu sehen,wie ungeniert vor 50 Jahren wirklich immer und überall geraucht wurde.Nur mal so nebenbei..Das Bild von Judy Garland,im Oval Office am Schreibtisch lehnend mit Kippe,ist einfach köstlich;)

Dieses Buch ist eines, welche die Amerikaner als Coffee Table Book bezeichen. Also eines welches zufällig herumliegt und einen Eindruck vermitteln soll, wie gebildet der Besitzer ist.In diesem Fall trifft es die Bezeichnung gebildet ganz gut.Hunderte Photos aus der Zeit der kurzen Präsidentschaft Kennedys vermitteln einen guten Eindruck über diese von den Amerikanern heute verklärte Zeit.Auch eine DVD mit noch mehr Material befindet sich ganz hinten im Buch.Ausserdem sind mal kurze, mal längere Texte zu den einzelnen Bildern zu lesen, mal mehr, mal weniger aufschlußreich.Viele oft gesehene Bilder, richtiggehende Icons, aber auch sehr viel unbekanntes, sehenswertes Material findet sich hier nebeneinander.Die Druckqualität ist für den Preis gut, trotzdem hat mir an einigen Stellen die Auswahl nicht so gut gefallen.Ich hätte mir noch mehr unbekannte Bilder gewünscht, es sind mir ein paar zuviel drin, die schon xmal irgendwo gedruckt wurden. Und teilweise wirkt die Bildauswahl etwas planlos.Kennedys Frau Jackie zog im Hintergrund viele Fäden und schuf auch den neuen Mythos Camelot, der JFK als einen primus inter pares beschreibt und somit neuen Glanz verleiht. Es sollte eine Abgrenzung zu der als miefig empfundenen Ära Eisenhowers gezogen werden.Aber auch JFK selber war sehr rührig um sein Image bemüht, die Bilder mit seinen Kindern im Oval Office entstanden meistens, wenn Jackie ausser Haus war. Ihr war das Vorzeigen ihrer Kinder in der Öffentlichkeit nicht angenehm.Das Buch ist ganz klar ein Glanzband und Kritik an JFK ist hier nicht erwünscht.Wer also ein historisch ausgewogenes Buch sucht, wird hier enttäuscht werden.Das Buch ist auch keine Biographie, sondern beschreibt und bebildert vor allem die Amtsjahre John F.Kenndedys.Trotzdem ist das Buch unbedingt einen Kauf wert, wer nur ein klein wenig Interesse am Mythos Kennedy hat, wird hier nicht enttäuscht werden.
