Has what part of the plants are used!
I listen to commercials for the medicines that are out there and the side effects. The side effects are enough to scared you to death. You can take it for one thing and end up with liver or kidney failure, heart attack, or even cancer. No, thank you! This book is awesome. It tells you exactly what part of the plant to use and how to use it. When it grows and where to find it. Then there are pages to write notes. The only down side, in my opinion, are the pictures. I would like to see additional pictures that are close up of the flowers and leaves and maybe some roots. However, I can use a lot of the other books have obtained of the years. They great pictures but don't give the information that is really needed to make it useful. All of these plants are in the Mid-Atlantic area. (West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania) I'm sure they are in other parts of the country too. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for real information. Most books are just reference material. This book is direct and to the point. It does it all except make it for you. This book is a definite must have for today's world. Covers colds, flu, boils, STD's, antibiotics, infections, seizures, cuts, weight loss, tumors and much more. Who would have thought that my own back yard was a pharmacy? Please be respectful of what nature has given us.

Very useful. Very interesting. A great buy.
We love this book. We've had it for some time now. We had a hard time at first trying to find a book specifically about the plants in the Appalachains- and our back yard. I had come across the first edition book on an independent publisher site, and it was quite expensive. So when I went back to buy this book last Christmas, I was so thrilled to find the second edition here on Amazon for a much more affordable price. It has color pictures, full descriptions of the plants, what they are used for, when to harvest, what part to use, and various warnings about using the plants, as well as a full page beside each plant for your own notes.Just like the author says in the book, we believe that the medicines we need grow in our own back yard. If you share that philosophy, buy this book.

Can't use of ID!!
Deceitful. Book claims to be used for identification. That is FALSE!The only glossy pages are the front and back cover. Only one picture per plant/tree and that picture is usually of the flower so we should only look for the plant when its in bloom. Pictures are very pixelated with NO detail of the leaves and half the time the pictures DONT MATCH THE WRITTEN DESCRIPTION!!! I Don't know if to trust the picture or the written description. This book is only useful if you can already identify the plants, shrubs, and trees.Book must be bought with a solid field guide/ID for plants, shrubs and trees!!Wish I can add pictures!!! For pokeweed it say le af veins are noticeably dark red in picture the entire leaf, veins included are solid green. Says berries are "purple-black" but there's no picture of said "purple-black" berries!!For chickweed it says "the plant bears smooth oval leaves" yet every one of the 11 leaves in the picture are cleft near the top on one side (appearance of two lobes) and look mitten shaped.

Well done!
Nice addition to my library of wild edible and medicinals. . . only one small problem, an image on page 64 is badly pixilated/tiled.Well done!

Interesting and insightful.
Having grown up on a farm in Appalachia with parents who knew which plants to do what with and how to prepare them, I was excited to find this book which is filled with insight and space to take notes. This book enables me to re-connect with the outdoors and teach my grandsons in a way that allows them to retain the information.
