Loose Woman: Poems

I go back to Loose Woman by Sandra Cisneros time and time again. She is my favorite author. Loose Woman is a brilliant poetry book. It brings me comfort and I am sure it will bring you comfort too.

Para los amantes de la poesía, ¡yo recomiendo mucho esta colección de poemas por Sandra Cisneros! Especialmente recomiendo esta colección para los a quienes les interesa la literatura femenista o multicultural. Cisneros tiene un tono audaz y honesto, muy franco y refrescante. Ella escribe como si ella tuviera una pasión intensa detrás de cada palabra, y cada palabra y frase tiene un propósito. Además, hay un humor en su tono franco, y también en mucho de la imaginería. Cualquiera que puede comparar ella misma a un gato mientras evaluando las expectativas de genero y sexo y también me causanda a reír tiene mi interes. También, si te interesan las lenguas y aprender sobre las culturas diferentes, ¡las obras de Cisneros son perfectas para ti! Hay una mezcla fascinante y bella de inglés y español en sus poemas (solo un poema es solo español), y añade un elemento exótico a su escritura. También hay referencias a elementos sobrenaturales, como “brujas”, y otros referencias a su herencia cultural, la cual crea una colección rica en significado personal y cultural. Si quieres leer algo estimulante y lleno de sentimientos verdaderos, Cisneros es una opción excelente. Pienso que yo estaré más consciente de las experiencias diferentes de cultura en los Estados Unidos ahora que yo he leído esta colección.

I'm sure Sandra Cisneros is not for everyone - her poems are alternately cocky, vulnerable, bawdy, crude, sensual, exotic...but above all they are achingly real. They are full of her Hispanic heritage; I cannot relate to them in this way since it is not my personal ethnicity, but it doesn't matter - the joys, heartaches, yearnings, failures, hopes, and wistfulness are feelings that transcend every nationality. As someone who wanted very badly to write (but lacked the discipline and the creativity to do so), I was obsessed with this book in my early twenties, and read it voraciously, trying to emulate her style. Eventually I realized one's writing style has to come from within one's self, not co-opted from someone else (especially someone else with a completely different upbringing, background, and origin), but I still admire (and envy) her ability to evoke such complexity with so little, and it remains one of my very favorite books of poetry. I have gifted this book to many women friends. Disclaimer: this is not for those who wince at the mention of female genitalia or what those body parts do. It is a frank and honest look at what it means to be a woman; when it is glorious, and when it does not feel quite so glorious. Cisneros doesn't blush, and she doesn't wallow in passive-aggressive BS, even when lovelorn.(NOTE: It's hard to review Cisneros's book of poetry in the terms given to choose from by Amazon (ostensibly meant to apply to a novel), such as "How would you describe the plot of this book? - Predictable, Some twists, or Full of surprises?" Obviously, none of those terms apply to a book of poetry, nor are you able to describe the entire book with one word (choices include: "Hopeful", "Dark", "Nostalgic", "Thoughtful", etc.) Books of poetry are often full of many different moods and ideas; some predictable, some not. I'd love to see a different set of initial questions offered for a book review of something other than a fictional novel.)

Wow. I want to scream YASSSS, GIRL!! Can I?! Because YASSSS!! Cisneros is a whiskey kind of woman. Strong and smooth with some heat. I appreciate how she dusted Spanish throughout and stayed true to her roots. She certainly has a hell of a way with words-- foul mouthed and fresh. I can see this collection as controversial as she is completely forthright (which I find refreshing) while some folks may be more conservative (this may not be for those types). I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend to anyone looking for a healthy dose of stout feminism.

Sandra Cisneros will bring out the Poet in you. The way she cleverly aligns her words will bring tears to your eyes and the color within the poems will encourage a chuckle from the pit of your stomach. The most simplistic poems are the most profound and the poems laced with the most Spanish are the most relateable and I'm not even Spanish! This book changed my life, it has put a swivel in my hips, a bulge in my writing. It has allowed me to embrace my own style while keeping hers as a reminder. READ READ READ, and then let someone else. PASS THIS ON! Some of my favorite poems were: You Bring Out The Mexican In Me and Perras (so saucy and refreshing).

If you love poetry, you will love this book! Bold, daring, and sensual.

I ordered this on a whim after reading Woman Hollering Creek. If you think you're going to avoid erotic poetry from Sandra Cisneros, you don't know Sandra. I will say, though, that although the erotic, lustful poems are great in this collection, Cisneros is at the best when her poetry is abstract.

This is now my favorite book of poetry. Sandra Cisneros is a genius.

This collection of poetry by Sandra Cisneros is unabashed, unafraid, modern, feminist and at times immodest free verse, which is as precise as it is indolent.
