Great current synopsis of vertebrate evolution by a knowledgeable author.
Great current synopsis of vertebrate evolution by a knowledgeable author. Well illustrated and comprehensive. Dismissed, as solved, the placental origins controversy too readily I believe.

Great Book!
Great book, haven't read yet but I've skimmed through several times and I can tell I love it already.I'll let the photos speak for themselves!!! People, you have cell phones with cameras, put photos in your reviews, especially if the book has illustrations, even of it doesnt have illustrations the Table Of Contents and a sense of the book is still important for a person to know if that's the book they are looking for.

Worthy Update
I bought the third edition of this book for my Vertebrate Paleontology class last year, and I found myself regularly going back to reference it to brush up on facts. With that edition having been published in 2005, I knew some of the sections were outdated (and the occasional upright, tail-dragging theropod figures bothered me), so I decided to check out the new edition. Every section is, at the very least, brushed up to reflect new views and discoveries, and many parts have been completely re-done. It would have been nice to see more of the figures updated, however. Many still show outdated postures (which is mostly just a pet-peeve for me, but I was hoping to see it change). Overall, lots of significant changes in the text, and new featured "box" sections, that make it a worthy update from the previous version. Also, I bought the kindle edition this time, and I am very pleased with the formatting. The text size can be changed, and the layout adapts to fit your window, instead of being fixed in a textbook-page format. This makes it much easier to read when I have a word document open in one half of the screen, with the book open in the other half.

Wonderful book, very informative
Michael J. Benton’s paleo books are all awesome from what I’ve seen; this book is no exception. As an undergrad, I found this to be a great study resource!

Super informative. Great book!
This book is phenomenal. I got it used, and it’s in good shape. It is so informative and great for me, someone who is preparing to get their PhD in paleontology!

A good buy, at least for a non specialist
Although I didn't read the book, what I found in it correspond perfectly to what I was expecting. An overview the diversity of vertebrates and their apparition in the geologic times. The illustration are numerous and very well done.

Great textbook
Comprehensive information on vertebrates.

Splendidly comprehensive
This fine successor to previous standard works on vertebrate palaeontology is the best yet: far more up to date than Romer or Carroll, appreciably updated since its third edition, and written in a way that should appeal to anyone seriously interested in the story of how backboned creatures evolved. I particularly like the boxes of additional information on various topics. Its glossary will help the uninitiated get to grips with the inevitably numerous technical terms.
