This four disc set features all four episodes that make up the acclaimed and award nominated second series of George Gently Martin Shaw returns to 1960s Northumberland as Inspector George Gently in four feature length films. The series throws Chief Inspector Gently into a maelstrom of murders and mayhem, whilst lovingly recreating the swinging sixties as it finally hits the North-East, in perfect and nostalgic detail. Chief Inspector George Gently is the classic unsung hero of detective fiction and in Martin Shaw s expert hands he becomes a passionate, growling, ex-army boxer. With his sidekick, the ambitious and undisciplined Detective Sergeant John Bacchus, they make the perfect police partnership, full of warmth and humour. But even the closest partners can come to blows when Gently and Bacchus enter the boxing ring, to raise monies for the police widow s fund but who will be knocked out for the count of ten?

RECOMMENDED
I love period drama - which is effectively what this is. Set in the 1960s, that time of great social change, for women particularly, there's some loving attention to detail, and a stark reminder of how much life has changed in the ensuing forty years or so.Over the decades Martin Shaw has learnt something of his craft, and he provides us with a wise, compassionate character who has known both triumph and tragedy and is the better man for it. It's a treat to watch the relationship between George and John, played by the outstanding Lee Ingleby, grow in trust and respect. Ingleby's performance is scrumptious, and at times very funny. It's a testament to both actors and to the writer's and casting director that it really is hard to imagine anyone else in these roles, they have made the so much their own. A highly recommended series, dealing with some quite gritty material.

Gently Go Forth...
Brilliant. Martin Shaw is wonderful as the gentle Inspector George Gently, a grizzled London copper, relocated to the North East, just as impressive is Lee Ingleby as the ah, slightly less open minded Sgt John Bacchus. Together they solve some very well thought out beautifully filmed cases, the chemistry between the two leads is fantastic. If you enjoy the Morse prequel Endeavour, I think you would also like this. It's not a rip off by any means, but is similar in its time period and quality.Interesting fact: the TV series is set in Durham in Northumberland, while the books the series is loosely based on is set in Norfolk.

Good acting from the whole cast..
George Gently, Series 2 staring Martin Shaw grows on you the more you purchase and enjoy the story. I was doubtful with the earlier series but the more you watch the better the characters seem to become believable. A good series and well acted..
