Good for conceptualizing how to teach and conference with the youngest writers. I teach 1st grade and conferring has been a struggle in terms of keeping other students motivated, on-task, and making sure that the students you do conference with actually try to implement what we covered in our conference. The book does a good job of emphasizing the importance of routines and provides ways to track student needs and progress, but the majority of it focuses on the actual steps of the conference. It also assumes that you faithfully follow the Calkins workshop model (which I don't), but I did get useful tips for conferencing that I can adapt for my own classroom.

Conferencing strategies for any age
My students' growth in writing is directly attributed to the continual conferencing they have with me or other advanced writers. While conferencing, I find various phrases starters and conferencing techniques from this book pop into my head. This book offers a framework in which to teach the writing strategies and process. This book was intended for early childhood writing, but I find the framework directly applicable to in a high school setting. I am amazed how this book has helped my under-performing,inner city,below-grade level high school scholars to reflect on their writing to produce meaningful prose. The conference transcripts are the most valuable.

Excellent detailing of the encounter between student and educator throughout the conference process! Most enjoyable are the anecdotal retellings of actual conferences between the authors, and students. As an educator, I appreciate being able to "observe" other professionals actually working with students and hear the language of the interaction. Thank you for a pragmatic, user-friendly, easily-read-and-enjoyed resource!

Great read
Great book! I recommend to anyone who is interacting with a young writer. Parent, teacher, or anyone with access to young writers. Tons of examples so it's easier to understand.

Teaching how to conference better
I have become a Lucy Calkins fan. She has helped move my teaching of writing to another level. This book focuses on being efficient and productive in individual conferences with children - related to writing. Great resource!

Book
Was a required textbook, overpriced, for very little information. Served it purpose of selling teachers, but offering little to students.
