Great for beginners and casual play, but benefits from upgrades.
I bought the Explorers of the Deep Commander deck as soon as it was released because I’ve always liked Simic strategies and have a soft spot for Merfolk. Out of the box, this deck delivers exactly what it promises: a fun, flavorful, and synergistic play experience built around +1/+1 counters, ramping with the explore mechanic, and building up a board of Merfolk that grow stronger over time. The deck feels cohesive, which is something not every preconstructed Commander deck manages, and it flows in a way that’s very satisfying—each turn, you’re either growing your creatures, finding lands, or setting up value engines that snowball into a powerful board state. From a new player’s perspective, this is a fantastic entry point into Commander. The strategies are straightforward and don’t require deep format knowledge to enjoy, but they still have enough depth that the deck doesn’t feel boring after a few games. If you’ve never played Commander before, this deck is easy to pick up and learn with, and if you’re already a Commander player but want something more casual and flavorful, it’s still worth grabbing. I also appreciated the extras included in the box: the foil-etched display commander looks great, the life tracker is handy, and the sample collector booster adds a little surprise factor. That said, there are some clear limitations. First, if you’re expecting this deck to contain expensive staple cards or reprints that hold long-term value, you’ll be disappointed. The card pool is designed more for cohesion and playability than for financial value. Second, while the deck is fun, it’s not tuned for higher-power Commander tables. It can hold its own against other precons and casual builds, but once you sit down with people playing optimized decks full of fast mana, tutors, and heavy interaction, Explorers of the Deep will struggle to keep up. Its biggest weakness is a lack of strong removal and interaction—if an opponent lands a big threat or combo piece, you often have limited ways to answer it. On the plus side, this deck has an excellent upgrade path. Simic is one of the strongest color pairs in Commander, and there are countless options to strengthen the shell. Adding cards like Doubling Season, Deepglow Skate, or better removal spells immediately boosts its power. If you enjoy the Merfolk tribal aspect, there are plenty of additional Merfolk lords and support pieces available to make the theme even stronger. The foundation is solid enough that upgrading feels rewarding instead of like starting over. Overall, I’d rate Explorers of the Deep a strong four stars. It isn’t perfect, and competitive players will find it lacking in raw power and value, but as a preconstructed deck designed for casual play, it hits the mark. It’s fun, thematic, beginner-friendly, and leaves plenty of room to grow. If you’re looking for an easy way to dive into Commander or just want a deck that plays well out of the box, this is a great choice.
