ok I'm an idiot....how do you shift gears? Please take pity on an old man. Here's what I know: there are two levers on the side of the brakes ;->

Biking can be a bit confusing at first, but we're here to help :) There are 2 paddles on each shifter, the large paddle and the small paddle behind it. Move these paddles separately, pushing them inward toward the center of the bike. Shifting the right paddles controls the rear derailleur and moves the chain onto the different cogs in the rear. Shifting the left paddles controls the front derailleur and moves the chain onto the different chainrings. When it's too hard to pedal and you want to shift into an easier gear, push inward on the right large paddle. When it's too easy to pedal and you want a harder gear, push the small paddle inward. The left side operates like the right, only the functions of the 2 paddles are reversed, and they make a big difference to the ease of pedaling. Note: in order to shift, you need to be pedaling .
