Q: How big are the pieces, and how hard? I'm looking for something vegan for small older dogs, so need small pieces that aren't too tough to chew.

They are small pieces..they are hard like normal dry dog food ...you could probably soften with a little water or broth if you need to...I blend this product with v-dog which is bigger pieces. Both products are very good! Both my 16 year old lab-boxer mix and my 3 year old basset hound are thriving on this mix and loving it! I also add pet flax oil by barleens to their meals.

Q: Odd that the amount of protien is NOT listed???

Q: Anybody else notice a very odd/funky smell on this dog food?

I haven’t noticed a off/funky smell. I can only feed this to my dog due to meat allergies and all other vegan options cause her anal gland to flare up.

Q: Why vitamin D2 as opposed to D3?

Most but not all D3 is animal derived and this is a vegan dog food. There is one vegan D3 on the market called Vitashine derived from lichens. Dogs can be poisoned by too much vitamin D so check recommended amounts if you choose to supplement their food.
