I just walked outside with my yardstick; the screen cover is about 22.5 inches in diameter-the 29 inch diameter is the distance between the outside edges of the pit. (There's a pretty wide "lip" between the grill and the outside edge.) Hope that answers your question-

Charcoal burns to hot the fire pit is made to have wood burn in it.

The legs are preassembled on brackets attached to the fire bowl. They do not come off.
