REVIEW UPDATE: IT IS JUNK!!! :(
UPDATE:- After more extensive testing I had to conclude that this unit, in any and all configurations, with or without using the #1 mailbox for identification, whether it is charging or fully charged, makes no difference and keeps cutting off the transmission on its own unexpectedly without any reasons, making it completely USELESS!!! :(- Entering DTMF tones for system changes is an excruciating pain! It took dozens and dozens of trials just to put it into Sleep Mode and then back into Wake (operational) mode.- Changing the Pass-Code took approximately 70-80 trials, NO exaggeration!- With voice, I was barely able to complete a 10 second sentence, and usually got cut off within 3-4 seconds.THIS THING, AS IS, IS A PIECE OF WORTHLESS TRASH! :(===============================================THE GOOD:- Small and ultra lightweight.- Has built-in battery.- Easy to use.- Wide range of compatibility.- Simple "poor man's repeater" solution.- Does NOT require to comply with "repeater" rules!- USB charge option.- Last message playback.- One outgoing message (for Station ID or other identification) and 2 additional voice-mailboxes.THE BAD:- Unexpectedly switches from Reception to Transmission in the middle of a talk.- DTMF codes take time to learn and figure out.SUMMARY:This tiny little thing can solve a lot of issues for many radio operators, whether it is used for simple walkie-talkies or more advanced HAM radios. You simply turn it on, connect it one of your radios, adjust the volume on that unit and then ready to go! THAT'S IT for basic operation. Of course, if you want extras, then you have them too! First of, you can and should change your passcode right away in order to avoid unauthorized access and to put the unit into SLEEP mode (stop it from transmitting) when necessary. Then of course, you can setup an outgoing message in mailbox #1, which can be your station identification (this is .... (your call-sign) and this is an automated simplex repeater system - or something). Also, if you want to leave important messages to your party, then you can use mailbox #2, and they can use mailbox #3 to reply to you without deleting each other's messages. It also has a "Repeat Last Message" function for the live repeater mode, so if you didn't quite catch the message your party said, you can play it back again. Naturally, you can activate/deactivate the unit with your radio's DTMF tone (digital dial-tone) IF your radio has it. If you're using a walkie-talkie, then this is NOT an option for you obviously. The one REALLY, and I mean, REALLY (!!!) IRRITATING thing is when this unit, just out of the blue all by itself, CUTS YOU OFF and instead of taking your transmission, it just stops and switches into sending mode, without you knowing it because there is no feedback, so the only way you know your transmission was cut off by listening back and then realizing the problem. This also affects DTMF codes, which, out of 12 trials only got through 2 times for me! I've read that others complain about the same issue, but the officials could only recommend two solutions. One; Wait till the unit fully charged up and NOT connected to the charger any more, and Two: Disable the automated station voice identification transmission from your mailbox #1. But again, that's one of the MOST important and useful feature, to have the station automatically identify itself, so you CAN hear it away and know that you're STILL within reach of your unit. But I've tested it and sorry to say that NEITHER of these ideas solve this extremely irritating problem, which makes the entire system UNRELIABLE at best! :(CONCLUSION:- If you're willing to compromise to the erroneous receive cut-off issue, then this unit is a great little simplex repeater! And the BEST part is that by law, this is NOT a repeater (!!!) and so, does NOT have to comply with the frequency limitations and restrictions of full-fledged Duplex-Repeaters and/or Cross-Band Repeaters that qualifies as a auxiliary-station with its own set of rules and technical complications (to comply with the rules). So, in the end, I give it 3 Stars for being unreliable, but still useful! :)
