That is unusual but possible at low incubation temperatures and/or with very low concentrations of bacteria - CFU's (colony forming units). Under most conditions, the Safe Home Bacteria in Drinking Water Test Kit can provide a completed test result as fast as 24 hours (for a positive bacteria test). At low incubation temperatures, the confirmation of a negative test result, can take longer. The Safe Home Bacteria test kit will detect down to 1 CFU (colony forming unit), and is extremely effective, under most conditions. However, DIY test kits are strictly a "screening tool". Our DIY Bacteria Test Kit is used for such testing in more than a dozen countries, around the world. Since at home testing cannot cover all of the possible variables, I would recommend re-testing with another Safe Home DIY Bacteria Test. You can also choose to purchase bacteria confirmation testing, by sending your next water sample directly to a certified laboratory. We actually have a lab tested bacteria confirmation test available at our EnviroTestKits website (under Safe Home Pro Bacteria). This allows you to purchase the kit and ship your water sample directly to our EPA certified lab. The "in lab test" has total control over possible background interference or environmental variables. Q: I have a UV filter and my test turned blue. Does this test detect “dead” bacteria or is my filter not working?

I suspect your filter is not working. When we installed a UV filter, the test showed negative for bacteria after showing the presence of bacteria before we put in the filter.

Hello David, Thank you for your interest in our Safe Home DIY Bacteria in Drinking Water Test Kit. This particular kit holds ONE kit to test for Coliform Bacteria. It does not contain any additional testing materials. It's simply not cost effective to do so (no affordable for the consumer). However, each Lot Number of kits produced, are passed through extensive Quality Controls, including numerous Positive and Negative Controls (by USEPA guidelines). Our EPA Certified Laboratory conducts over 50,000 Regulated Bacteria Tests annually and has multiple PhD's on staff who make sure this product does exactly what it is intended to do, for the consumer (under normal conditions of course). If Coliform Bacteria is present down to 1 cfu, it will record a positive result. If zero Coliform Bacteria is present, it will record a negative result. Q: How many kinds of bacteria can it detect? can it dedect pseudomonas, aeromonas, salmonella, shigella, enterobacter, klebsiella?

Other harmful bacteria may exist in a water supply, that our kit will not test for.
