Technically it could stay on your counter. But it is more efficient to use it in a refrigerator.

Would this also work in the freezer of a refrigerator ?

Should be safe. It's basically just a hollow rubber container with slots on top. You put baking soda in it to absorb smells. That said, if your freezer smells strongly, it might not be getting cold enough to store food properly, or it might be thawing and refreezing.

can you use this in the microwave? Can you use the microwave when this is inside?

I don’t see why not although I haven’t tried it.

What is the difference between using this item and just putting the box of baking soda straight into your fridge? Is it just for looks ?

Just for fun. It is nice that you can split a box and change out the baking soda part way through for more freshness. But the lid can come off so you also have to be kind of careful where you store it in the fridge.
