S.T.Dupont Défi Extreme Lighter: Matt Black

I very much like the brand ST Dupont and was looking forward to having one of these lighters. It is so disappointing that a luxury brand such as this disappointed from the moment it came out of the box. Feel of the item was only ok, it appeared to be a solid design however there was a nagging feel of an element of cost saving in the materials used. It didn’t feel like a lighter that would command this price. Maybe because production has been moved to China? Once I had filled the lighter with fuel as per the instructions I tried to light it. For the most part it failed, only lighting approximately 15 times before I thought this has to go back. I would say it only lit maybe 25% of the time and by the time of the 15 successful ignition it had depleted 2/3rds of the full chamber of lighter fuel. The lighter also had a problem in that I could hear gas still being released after I had let go of the ignition switch. As I said in the title maybe I was unlucky however I don’t think it is unreasonable to think for a lighter that costs up to £250 I shouldn’t have any of these problems. Lighter has been returned and I shall look for something else instead.

Typical high quality item by Dupont. Lighter is very extremely easy to operate and very easy to refill when using the Dupont refill canister. The lighter feels very solid and has a nice weight to it. The flame size is controlled by an oversize dial at the bottom and the flame itself doesn’t go out even in windy conditions, makes it very easy to light a cigar.

Bought mine off Amazon and the flint was finished so you have to constantly keep trying to ignite it to get it to fire on. You email S.T DuPont and they in a nice way say ‘tough’ you should've gone to a official retailer and not off Amazon and to go to an outlet and get it fixed which essentially you can do yourself by buying yourself a set of flint but you would expect better service considering how much you pay for one of these things. But regardless, in simple terms just pay the extra and less convenience which will work out better in the long term.

UPDATE: I finally found the company in the UK to sort my faulty lighter. In fact I had a brand new one through my door today. Problem resolved in just one week. Company is Stone Marketing Ltd, Tonbridge, Kent. Email [email protected] and attach your purchase invoice. Very helpful staff. I bought this in Nov 2021 and it has ceased working May 2023. Not good for such an expensive item. I would be happy to have it repaired but cannot contact the seller to arrange this? Is there an after sales service? I have to say I am very disappointed..

Was looking forward to having this lighter and using it for many years. Unfortunately after just over 2 months of occasional use it no longer works. Piezo ignition seems to have stopped working as the gas is coming through. Only used correct st DuPont red gas. Very disappointing for such an expensive item

As you would expect from maker Dupont, this is a quality product that will last. Expensive YES but you get what you pay for.

I have this to my husband for our anniversary and he loves it, the quality is spot on, such a very gift.

Built for the extreme ST DuPont Paris (made in China) broke after a few months of use. Don’t waste your money on this pile of crap. The only thing about it is the name. The top sliding parts would get stuck all the time and the electric flint stopped working. Stick to a Clipper or BIC LIGHTER
