FRANK SINATRA AND STEVE MCQUEEN TOGETHER
Frank Sinatra was eager to give newcomer Steve McQueen a break by having a pivotal role in NEVER SO FEW. I am watching all of Steve McQueen's films and didn't know very about NEVER SO FEW. It is great to see Sinatra and McQueen together. Sinatra is great as the troubled Capt. Tom Reynolds trying to deal with the excitement and horrors of war. Burma is an unusual setting for a WWII drama pairing American and British soldiers with local Burmese guerilla fighters. I am not sure how they all fit together and how Sinatra's Captain Reynolds was in charge. It is an interesting war picture as our group is stationed deep in the wood attacking and being attacked by Japanese soldiers. Shouldn't they have had a more secure location?McQueen is again co-starring with Charles Bronson and being directed by John Sturges. Sexy Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida makes her Hollywood debut in a very unbelievable romance with Captain Reynolds while being the "kept woman" of a much older man played by Paul Henreid. The romance doesn't fit the story and detracts from the movie. Reynolds is on leave and runs into Lollobrigida. Hey, what could be better? No one seems to take into consideration that The US and Italy were at war during WWII. It makes an Italian-American love affair seem highly unlikely but anything is possible in love and war.The film gave Steve McQueen some great exposure and no doubt was a great stepping stone in his career. Sinatra showed his acting talents. Plus Gina Lollobrigida always lights up the screen. NEW SO FEW is worth a watch.

Never So Few
There is a great deal of Hollywood inserted in the historic truths of World War IImovies. However, this DVD is a superb, realistic movie about the some of thecontradictions of Allies during World War II. Of course, during the early yearsof World War II, it is common knowledge the Japanese invasion of South East Asiawas very overwhelming. Burma was no exception. Both American and British militarywere heavily involved in arming and fighting with the Burmese. But this film clearlyillustrated the problem of Renegade Warlords who would loot even the allies forill-gotten gain. Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen, with several supporting actorsbrought such realities to the screen with such power that it felt like I was there. This movie is a classic and timeless in its relevance to South East Asia!

Never So Few Blu Ray
I was very young when I saw this movie in the theater. I think I paid twenty five cents to see it. About ten years ago I bought the SD DVD and it looked good to me. I decided to watch it on my 4K blu-ray player that upscales the blu-ray DVDs to 4K. The PQ was the best I have seen and that includes the theater. The dts-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound was also good. The picture has nice colors.

Good Cast Overshadowed By Sinatra
If the idea of Frank Sinatra as The Ultimate Man annoys you to no end, skip this movie. It's Sinatra's film all the way. Everybody else gets a back seat to Frankie. Which is a shame when you see the supporting cast includes Charles Bronson, Dean Jones, Phillip Ahn, and Steve McQueen. McQueen gets a few moments to shine, but not too much and he doesn't dare try to do what he did to Yul Brynner in The Magnificent Seven. All the same, it's a good, tense war drama that occassionally forgets the war part to concentrate on Sinatra romancing Gina Lollabrigida.

A novel of great power by a warrior/writer
Few returned to tell of the deprivations, higher command neglect, and reckless courage of those involved in the merciless, often hand-to-hand combat experienced by those "few" fighting behind-the-Japanese lines in the Burmese theatre. Tom Chamales was one of the bravest and gave the world this gift of a novel before the world was robbed of his literary talent by his untimely death at the age of 35. Not since Ernst Junger's First World War account: 'Storm of Steel' has a novel brought alive the thrill and horror of close combat so vividly.

A good war drama film.
With an excellent cast of Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Brian Donlevy, Peter Lawford, Dean Jones, Paul Henreid, Richard Johnson, and Gina Lollobrigida in WW2 in Burma fighting as OSS operatives against Japanese army and Chinese raiders.

Never so much

OK
The jungle scenes are good. War films about Burma are rare. The Sinatra romance scenes take away from the film. Steve McQueen steals the show.
