Stand beside my board with the sleeve end on my left and with the cord minder attached to the ironing board on the side opposite to me, I have to push it to my right and continue around in a circle until it is parallel to the board when putting my board away. You should probably return the unit and request a new one. The screw/bolt is under a lot of tension because it must hold the unit steady while the cord pulls and bends the rod. I had to tighten the screw/bolt on my unit several times after it was installed to keep it steady. Replacing the plastic bolt with a metal one could be challenging as the hole is likely metric.
