Direct Fit for 1999 Jeep Cherokee, but broke after 3 months
I bought this hood release cable 3 months ago because the handle part of the cable in my vehicle had broken off. Of note, where the wiry portion of the cable comes out, the plastic end where it sits in place was slightly too small and kept coming out. A little tape around it to make it thicker and give it some more friction fixed this.Sadly, this product broke after 3 months of moderate usage.Installation took about 10 minutes for me, but this can be done in 5. Requires a Philips head screwdriver, a T25 screwdriver, a flathead or small pry tool, some sort of pliers for bending purposes, some wire cutters and maybe strippers if you can't get your hood open, and some white lithium grease.I've outlined the procedure for replacing the cable if only the handle broke off.Procedure:Remove paneling by the door on the driver side floor by taking out the Philips head screws and pulling the panel out. There's a Philips head screw (I believe) in the back of the panel containing the hood release mechanism. It's in a hole big enough to stick your finger in. My plastic had separated there, so I didn't check.Remove the panel.Remove two T25 bits holding the main handle of the hood release cable.Remove the third T25 bit from the bracket connecting the cable to the chassis of the vehicle. To release the hood if only the plastic handle is broken: with wire cutters, cut the tubular section as close to the cable break point as possible. There's another thin layer of insulation around the cable wire. Use wire cutters or strippers to strip about half an inch to an inch of the insulation and not the inner wire itself. Holding the black portion of the cable in place with one hand, use the pliers to pull just the wiry portion to release the hood.Fully open and prop up the hood of the vehicle.Free the hood release cable from the clips holding it in position on the hood.Locate where the end of the hood release cable where attaches to a little lever on a piece of metal that is riveted to the hood.GENTLY bend that whole metal piece away from the hood with the pliers to give you just enough room to rotate and remove the hood release cable.Using a flathead screwdriver, pry the grommet (or destroy it with the wire cutters because the new cable has a replacement grommet).Pull the entire cable out from inside the vehicle.Route the new cable in from inside the vehicle.Attach the end of the cable to the metal piece.Push the plastic by the wire/hood end of the cable into place. I strongly encourage wrapping 2-3 layers of masking tape around it to make it thicker and give it enough friction to stay in place as mine did not until doing so. I used the pliers to push the wrapped cable into position.Put the cable back into the clips holding it in place.Push the grommet through so that it seals both sides of the firewall. Using the flathead screwdriver to help push it through helps, but be careful not to destroy the grommet.Attach the three T25 screws that were removed earlier.Replace the plastic panels and the Philips screws that hold them in place.Spray some white lithium grease on the wiry end of the cable.Bend the metal piece back into place.Pull the hood release as you normally would and spray some white lithium grease there as well.Test the hood release cable, a few times, pushing it back in if necessary to work in the grease.Enjoy being able to open the hood again normally for a while if you bought this brand of cable.I'm going to try a different brand of cable and report back. I've had some good experience with parts from 1A Auto (TRQ brand) for different repairs, so I'm going to try ordering from them.

Just a little shorter than the factory
Good replacement but a few inches shorter and made getting the retaining plate back into place difficult.

product did not last a year before breaking!
product did not last a year before breaking! This item does not fit exactly as it should, but was functional when it was still whole!!

The quality is less than the OEM product
Install was easy however the cable seems to be too long so the good is still difficult to unlatch.
