Warning MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!!!
This book is a lovely story about a girl who is evacuated to a countryside. This is the story of her life living in the country with no-one she knows. My favourite character is Shirley.I rate this book FIVE STARS.Recomended for ages 9+ as it can get a bit sad at parts. Love it!!!

Same old, same old
Honestly, I wouldn't bother reading this book if you've already read Queenie by JW. It's basically the same book, except this time it's set in WW2. Shirley is a carbon copy of Elsie - very imaginative, pretends to be an amazing ballerina, gets picked on at school etc; her mum is very similar to Elsie's mum - pushy, is very *close* to her boss, even works as a secretary; many of the plot points are the same - the list goes on. It just seems to me JW is running out of ideas. Also, there is no proper storyline, it just feels like she was scrabbling around to find something to make the book longer most of the time. All in all, wouldn't recommend. If you want an interesting story about evacuation/WW2, look elsewhere.

Another “see you in a couple of days” hit for my 9YO
Huge JW fans here. My 9YO is the perfect age for these books. The writing style is approachable and casual without being patronising. Lovely balance for younger readers who feel very grown up reading about the themes and narratives here. And such a wonderful bridge towards older kids books. Personally I love how the world today is echoed in the framework of the writing. Blended families, technology, fostering. No backing away here, with the story dealing with the excitement and anxieties of kids being shipped out from cities in WW2.This book has certainly made an impact with my daughter who has asked several times if it’s a true story.Well done JW, and epic and reliable author ✍️

Enjoyed greatly by this evacuee.
Got for my wife, as she was a Hitler-war evacuee to a Dartmoor village in Devon. She reports that she found it sad and funny - enjoyed it, read it for three or four hours continuously and completed it the next day. I spent a wee while identifying the location, seems to have changed a lot. My wife's billet has hardly changed at all.
