Good Quality.
Good quality. This lead holder has a good knurled surface.

Nice, Good Quality Tool
Nice, quality tool. Feels a little small and slick in my hand, but not much different in feel from my older lead-holders I still have from my old days as an engineering student. It seems more "pocket-worthy" than my oldies. Wish it had a knurled section, but I can get along with it just fine. Would I buy this again? -- For Sure. It's got a nifty little point sharpener in the end cap. Wouldn't want to rely on that in every case, but there it is. If you're not near a good point sharpener, it can get the job done.

So far so Good/Kind of Spooked by Some of the Reviews
So far so good. I am a bit spooked by some of the reviews. The inscription on the pencil doesn't say "Toison d'Or" (Golden Fleece). Instead it says KOH-I-NOOR Versatil 5900 The inscription is quite cleanly stamped though, so that is nice. There was also no annoying barcode sticker on the one I was sent. I am only mentioning this because one reviewer mentioned having to deal with the sticky glue left over from the sticker. I however didn't like the packaging it was send in. A small red zip baggie. Absolutely no protection during shipping. The lead that comes with this pencil is horrible. It's very light (much lighter than HB) and it's extremely scratchy when writing. It seems like a waste to include such inferior lead with the pencil. The clip comes off, but it takes a little nudging. I was hoping to be able to keep the clip on, but after using the pencil for about an hour, the clip was already moving from side to side a little and there is a review which shows this destroying the paint on the pencil. I managed to get the clip on mine off while only chipping the paint (a tiny bit) in two places. The paint on these seems to be a point of contention. I am worried it will wait until my return date has past and decided to peel, Ha Ha Ha! One reviewer mentions that their pencil had a smell. Mine does too, but it's very slight, I have to get my nose really close to the pencil to notice it. It is a lacquer like smell mixed with a freshly sharpened wood pencil smell, which seems weird because there is no wood on this pencil. The pencil is a little oddly weighted. The end cap/sharpener is pretty hefty (the heft seems to come from the cap, not the scary prongs that make up the sharpener) and ends up making the pencil feel slightly heavier toward the top. I put a foam grip cushion on mine and this has balanced the pencil out a bit better. A lot of reviewers have mentioned how "small" the pencil is, but none seem to say what they mean by small. I was able to use a foam cushion meant for a 7-8mm diameter pencil on it and that fits perfectly. The pencil measures 141mm (5.59") with the lead retracted. The pencil weighs 12.6g (without the lead and the foam grip cushion). To me it doesn't seem small. It feels more like a heavy (wood) pencil and as far as the length, it just feels like a wood pencil after a few sharpenings. Would I buy this again? Well I am hoping it will last for a bit and I won't have to consider that question for a while. So far so good!

BUY THEM! Read my review, you'll see why. Also includes: WHERE THE SHARPENER IS!
YES oh my gosh these are lovely. They are chic, write very well, and the graphite is great quality. The graphite is thick and dark. NOW, let me explain 1 thing that was VERY confusing to me...where the sharpener is. The sharpener is literally attached to the pencils. Each pencil has one. You unscrew the metal end of the pencil and see a prong. You hold the prong in one hand and the pencil-body in another. You take the pencil-body and stick the end of the graphite into the prong & TWIST. When you twist, it shaves the graphite into a point. Very strange, but extremely fulfilling. The only thing to keep in mind is that the graphite shavings will fall onto the ground, if not shaved over a garbage. Do not shave the pencil over clothing or white furniture/desk/etc. I really like these pencils, you will too. MY grandparents steal these from me all the time. OH: make sure your dogs don't get to these. Mine got to 3 of them on separate occasions. For some reason, I think dogs/animals are attracted to graphite (or something). This can cause serious damage, thank goodness my shepherd has an iron-stomach. Just something to keep in your mind. You'll love these...a lot.

CHEAP AND LOWER QUALITY
This mechanical pencil comes with a heavy, ugly bar code sticker on the body that I tried to remove, but it leaves a messy, thick residue of adhesive. I tried to remove it with “GOOF OFF” and picture shows the results. Cheap pencil, all cheap glossy paint

Clasp pencils are amazing. This is a product easy to mess up as modern clasp pencils prefer the old click click approach as appose to the slide and grip mechanism present her. Gives need weight and depth to the feel of a pencil while allowing for an active change in lead types as quick as needed. Very cost effective too and will save a lot of pencil shaves for cleaning. It's an artist essential in my opinion. To give someone the best possible start as an artist this pencil will be the most versatile tool they own. Standard pencils are important. Very nice sleek traditional design. I have seen older models from the 60s and even an old bohemian craft and they were vastly superior but this an amazon purchase for it to include a look of tradition and class is a welcome blessing for such an excellent price and quality. True artist need these and they even come in various sizes. Ideal for those needing a good starting pencil.

This product looks and feels good, but the function is lacking. I am used to Staedtler, Faber Castell, and Mitsubishi 2mm lead holders. Those all hold the lead securely with no wobbling around. However, this Koh-I-Noor 5900 and the 5201 do not hold any 2mm lead properly. No lead from any brand is held firmly in this holder. Even the lead that shipped with the lead holders was insecurely held. The worst part is that because the lead is pinched at one point, it creates a stress concentration that snaps softer leads. The Koh-I-Noor 6B and 8B leads are completely useless in their own lead holders because of this issue. If you want to use the (very good) Koh-I-Noor 6B or 8B leads, do NOT use this lead holder. This lead holder is ok to use with harder lead grades despite the wobble. PROS: Looks good Feels good CONS: Lead wobbles Snaps softer lead
