The Secure Home

This book is very well written and covers topics well beyond my head. Lots of good information on remodeling and new construction. A good read even if you are not doing any of those things, if you are into preparedness.

This book is worth its weight in gold! Almost!If you are like I was, you might be thinking the price tag is quite expensive ($47).But you can buy a half-priced version at the author's personal website:[...]In fact I RECOMMENDED you do this not just for the price savings but also because if you buy his original $47, it is so poorly bound that the pages will start falling out of your book within the first week of taking it out of the package.I purchased the pdf version and then printed the pages most interesting on my printer and then saved these in a 3-ring binder for later review and discussion with my wife.I really like the author's suggested security procedures for the following:* ARMED INTRUSION at home, at night* ARMED INTRUSION during the day* SEXUAL ASSAULT* KIDNAPPING* MOBS and SOCIAL UNREST* UNJUSTIFIED OR ILLEGAL ATTACK BY GOVERNMENT AGENTS* FIRE* NUCLEAR WAR (Nuclear, Biological Or Chemical Attack)* EARTHQUAKES, TORNADOES, and STORMSI also liked the various floor plans that he provided in his book.However there were a few minor typos and spelling errors in this book:Page 95: "All he know.." should be "All he knows..."Page 107: How control is the area by big corporations or government bureaucracies?Perhaps this should be "How controlled...Page 107: "Get a chart the local school district" should be "Get a chart of the local school district"Page 110: "If your are retired..." should be "If you are retired..."P.S. It's an awesome resource and I love it, but subjectively, it reminds me over and over again how much I can't afford to make a secure home. Great book, as usual from this great author.

Home preparedness, getting ready.

I just got my copy. Haven't read it yet. I skimmed through it. Some pretty good information with sketchs with pretty good drawings.I highly recommend this book before it become band.I have listened to Joel Skousen for years. I finally bit the bullet and bought my copy. There comes a time that sometimes you just have to do it.Thanks Joel for a good book.Edited: 2-5-19This book is amazing. I'm not a very fast reader so it's gonna take me a while to read it's entirely.I seriously recommend this book to anyone for any reason.

First, the good: there is a lot of info and it is possible to get something useful out of it. The bad: the author's claim to fame is "Skousen wall" and it does not work terribly well and the whole idea is less than it looks. Here is what I mean: first, 3 1/2" thick wall is complete garbage, will not stop even 7.62 x 39 round at all. The thicker wall MIGHT, but there are serious drawbacks. First, tactical: author uses 3/4" plywood as outer layer which is not at all fire resistant, and fire resistance is more important than ballistic resistance, in my opinion. Second, cost: 6" wall with 3/4" plywood face cost as much (or more) as solid concrete, and it is much less useful than concrete. The only possible benefit I see is in OPSEC (one can fill the wall from inside the house with no one to notice. But even this is less useful than it seems: if first building inside walls (by a contractor), the extra 6" wide empty space around the basement wall is sure to raise questions.

The only issues I have with this book thus far are 1) during printing it would appear that ink was running low in a specific region of the press and thus text was faded throughout the book at one horizontal position and 2) there are numerous spelling/typos (but they are minor). I recommend this book to anyone looking to improve the security of their living environment. The book points out all sorts of pros and cons to common house designs, location, etc. in addition to methods for improving energy efficiency and the integrity of the structure to natural disasters as well as man-made ones.

This book, 'Secure Home' is awsome. I could not set it down. Read it the first of may times, in 4 days. I have broken all my own rules of not putting pencil marks, no highliting, no ear marks, etc., But with this book I have done it all. I might have to purchase a second copy to put on the shelf and keep this one hidden. This book goes way beyond just a Secure Home. I highly recomend this book! This book is not for those seeking wealfare, hand-outs and so forth. This is for those who want to preserve their wealth, their health and their well-being. Purchase 2 copies now, cause you'll be marking the first one profusely.
