First time in my life I've ever used a straight edge for shaving. Had about a weeks worth of growth just to really put it to the test, and it did shine!Usually my face is pretty rough after waiting that long and using a disposable shaver, but when I got done with the straight edge, it was baby bottom smooth! As for proper holding methods, I just watched a bunch of Youtube videos because there are some real pros on there that will take you through an entire 3 pass shave.I don't have any previous experience to compare this particular straight razor to others, but I can say that it felt quite balanced, and natural in my hand. Installing the razor was no problem. You break the razor in half while it's still in the paper. Open up the blade holder and the razor butts up to knobs for the proper placement. You'll want to get a hot towel and soak your face first for a few minutes to soften everything up. Then some EZ blade shaving gel works quite well. I only used the gel on half of my face at a time, as it took me a fair amount of time to get to the other side. When you compare the price of replacement blades vs disposable razors, this is hands down the most economical path to take!I was paying about .71 for Gillette razors, vs .06 for a pack of Shark razor blades. That's $259/year vs $22/year. If you're a 20 year old man, and take that annual savings of $237/year and invest it in a Roth IRA until you are 65, at an average return of 8%, you will have $91,601.83!(and you won't have to pay any taxes on your interest of $80,936.83)Whatever you decide, I think this is a great way to go if you have the extra 10 minutes to shave a day.

BUY IT, BUY IT NOW!
Being a first time straight razor user, this truly makes the experience inexpensive and easy. The handle is sturdy and easy to manipulate and the blade changes are easy. I've used it several times now and I'm very pleased with it.

Great for first timers
To begin, I have never used a straight edge razor so I will not be as familiar with the terminology or the way to describe holding positions.Pros----------Size- the size of the blade and opening is very good as there is only about 1/4 inch of the blade exposed to shave. Don't need anymore and the amount of the blade the protrudes out is satisfactory.Color- Having a blade that is sleek and appealing as this is beyond measure. Although it is disposable blades and not single blade it's a gem.Functionality- Been using this for both dry and wet shaves and have not run into any problems using the blades with different positions or opening greater than 180 degrees. The blade stays firmly in place and does not stray from its holding position.Cons----------None that l can point out at this time.Been using this blade for about 1 month now.

and I found that razors are the best way for me to cut my own hair
I bought this product to trim and razor the hair on my head. I've always had a sort of "alternative" look, and I found that razors are the best way for me to cut my own hair. In the past, I've made do with disposable razors that I had to manually trim with nail clippers and/or wire cutters—this is a huge step up.It comes with 100 blades which should be 50 to 100 haircuts for me, saving me money on disposable razors and tons at the stylist. The handle does not weigh much, and has a black matte finish that has a good hand feel to it. Additionally, opening and closing the handle is incredibly smooth.I did not have difficulty inserting the blade as others have reported; I broke the blade apart, rested it on the notches, and then brought down the second half of the handle. I then pushed the lock down while resting the blade on a hard flat surface to secure it. Done. That's all.

its OKAY, not great.
I've been using this now for a few weeks and I just wanted to say a couple of things. First and foremost, its lighter then I expected it to be. To that end its a bit difficult to gauge how much pressure I should apply when shaving. After a few nicks and cuts I finally have a feel for it. Second, the swivel portion of this shaver is made of some cheep material as mine has already started to rust. The blades that come with it seem to go dull after about half way through my shave. All and all, for the money its not a bad deal. you can get 200 shaves if you break the blade in half. Just don't buy this thinking your going to get a hefty "true to the real thing" experience. I think its a inexpensive way to let people experience shaving with a single blade for the first time. But you will quickly out grow it.

This is a wonderful starter kit for someone looking to get into a more cost effective and classy way to shave. Chicks dig a classy guy. I shed some blood learning how to use it, but it was well worth it now that I've got it down. It can do a really good close shave on a new or newish blade, although it takes more time to shave with this than with a standard safety razor. Also, it can double as an improvised weapon. Overall a great buy.

Doesn't work well.
I decided to try this mistakenly thinking that I would get a better shave than with the cheap Aldi Persona disposable razors that I use.1) It is difficult to load. I watched a youtube video that showed me how to break the razors in half before unwrapping them, but loading is awkward, and one could easily cut their hands.2) It does not give you a close shave. I made several passes going in different directions, and I cut my face several times and made myself raw all over, but I still had quite a few whiskers. The blades just don't work well.3) I gave up after 6 shaves or so. I went back to my cheap Persona safety razors and I was amazed at how well they worked. I think that bumbling around with this piece of crap and watching shaving videos just made me better at shaving.

Warning
This is a great razor, but be warned. If you are afraid of cutting yourself I would try an electric razor, because straight razors are not for babies. You will also find yourself going through lots of blades because each time you shave with it, you will become more of a man. In turn this causes your beard to grow at an exponential rate. It may also give you an appreciation for whiskey and old timey boxing matches like you never had before...

A no brainier - just buy it!
Phenomenal - one of the sharpest and smoothest blades that I have used. I'd highly recommend Shark blades for anyone with a thick stubble. And the razor is incredibly handy and I love the design.
