The smell and the taste preserved like a roti wrapped in a thin cotton cloth we used to call 'chhanna'. What if someone tells you that it is a way towards holistic health? Dr Gauri Rokkam, with years of practice behind her, takes the reader on a trip towards wellness, achieved through food. By directing the intake of its quantity, controlling its quality and frequency, she believes we can achieve a complete wellbeing of mind, body and spirit. She writes: "Many clients come to me with a huge medical fle saying all reports are normal, but they still feel there is something wrong because they do not feel well inside. True wellness extends beyond the mere absence of diseases; it's the profound inner feelingthat permeates every aspect of our lives, enriching our well-being. If there is no such fecling of well-being inside, we are not healthy. The book is a comprehensive guide to the food you eat and serve on a plate, beginning from what it is on a molecular level, what it turns into when we eat it, how it affects us, when taken in excess does it harm our system, how science processes food and so on. She writes about many hormones that control the metabolism including insulin: "Insulin is an anabolic hormone."Anabolic" means "used for building". 'To build, we need to first "store?. Thus, the increased amount of insulin in the blood for an extended period tells the body to go into storage mode. Insulin inhibit fat-breaking mechanisms and activates fat-storing mechanisms in an attempt to store for any future building. As long as insulin is around, not only are we building stores, but we also can't use them up. This is not a favorable condition for anyone wishing to lose weight. Obesity, in turn, causes further hormone imbalances, leading to many diseases. So, the solution is to increase the amount of dietary fiber consumed."About sodium, she writes that sodium-rich foods accelerate bone loss. When sodium intake is high, the body gets rid of sodium via urine, taking calcium with it which depletes calcium stores thus affecting bone health. Finally, to deposit calcium well in the bones, resistance exercise is necessary. Get some good physicalactivity daily, even if it is as basic as going for a walk. If any of the above is missing, one cannot build a healthy skeletal system.Craft Your Wellness guides you towards what you eat and the food you should eat. The author begins the book with explaining some keyterms that you must come across in magazines and newspapers and eases the reader in with a lot of notes and anecdotes that bring smile to a reader's face. She also gives practical tips about daily routine. What are they? Well, I am not going to tell you everything. Pick up the book to know more.In one of the most interesting excepts, she writes: "People who consume sugar in large quantities exhibit the same brain activity as those who consume drugs or alcohol. It releases opioids and dopamine and thus, has addictive potential, similar to drugs. Even more worryingly, people who regularly consume sugar develop a stronger insensitivity toward dopamine (reduction in pleasure), and smaller amounts of sugar will no longer satisfy the craving."The author then tackles topics like importance of varied food choices, nutritive value of food, importance of fasting. She explains which foods are calory-rich and which ones are not. How it impacts you in your daily life. She also teaches the reader how to build a balanced plate. This book is also your guide to demystifying popular conspiracy theories like whether eating brown bread is good or not. The author explains not only the complex world of nutrition but also dishes out practical advice like how to go about the modern diet and how to find a food rich in a particular nutritent and how to supplement it.A detailed account of the food and everything related to it.
