Inherit the Wind: The Powerful Drama of the Greatest Courtroom Clash of the Century

A classic play that has taken on new relevance
Everyone should be aware that this is a play script, not a novel. The plot involves the battle between creationists and evolutionists and takes place in the 1920s-1930s era. Without becoming political, it's fascinating to me that the debate between these ideas that was so bitter nearly a hundred years ago has reared its head again in the 2000s. In fact, I bought this for my step-daughter who was frustrated in biology by some of her classmates interrupting the teacher with creationist rhetoric. In any event, the play itself is fast-moving and has dynamic, interesting characters. The dialog is a bit old-fashioned and hard to read at times, and the characters - especially Mathew Brady - are somewhat over-the-top. My step-daughter didn't read it because of the dialog, but I found it as compelling as the first time I read it several years ago.

It is better to learn and decide for yourself how to think
As a Christian, I went into this book a little on guard. Not only because the overt basis of the book is the original evolution education debate, but also the format--it is written as a play. However, after just a few pages, this book became one of my life-long favorites. The battle, in my mind, is not so much between pro- and anti-evolutionary forces, as between those who favor free learning and thinking, and those who want to control access to information in order to control your opinion. It is better to learn and decide for yourself how to think, even it you end up choosing a new path.To me, that is the message of the book.

Inherit the wind.
I would love to be in the play, especially as Drummond. All adult parts are appealing to play. I miss drama.

It came on time (came before the other book i ordered, which i ordered one-day shipping) and was in the condition it said it was on the site. I'm oh-so-glad it did, because I had to read it the very next day. Isn't that nice? I think it is.Thanks buddy, and if I ever need textbooks that you happen to have, I'll be sure to buy them from you, if I have the money, and if somebody else doesn't beat me to it.My sincere thanks once again,Viroc/Some Person That Bought A Book From This Other Person

A Thought Provoking Play
I love this book. I think everyone should read it. The writers knew how to make a statement jump off the page and leap through your mind pushing you to think; not just about Darwin's Theory but how man makes a difference. If you read something that gets you pondering it is a great read.

As Meaningful as Ever
I've read the play previously, seen the movie, and have read extensively about the clash between the two men. The play is as strong as ever a statement about religion/enlightenment/choice. Our book club will discuss it and act out some of it as part of our season of books that have been most influential to date.
