This box will only allow you to watch over the air (OTA) broadcasts from TV broadcasters in your area. It will not replace your cable provider's box. There are cable-only stations that you will not be able to receive such as Fox News Channel (not your local Fox affiliate), MSNBC, The Golf Channel, ESPN, and all of the premium movie channels.

Can this box work with the old fashioned rabbit ears?

Yes. You don't need a special antenna for digital television — although some stores will tell you that you need a special "HD" antenna. Those people are full of crap. You can keep using whatever antenna you were using in the 1990s! (I use a decades-old roof antenna, and it works great.) However, if you use an old antenna, it's probably best to have an antenna that has a wire ring in the middle, not just the two telescoping "rabbit ears."

How big of a hard drive will the handle?

If you get a 1/2 TB M.2 with the USB case that matches the technology (there are SATA M.2 and NVME types) of the drive, you will get reasonable recording performance and the USB drive setup would require low power well within the tuner's capability. On Amazon I have found reputable drive for under 40 USD and the correct USB case for 11 USD ....
