A truly outstanding and remarkable book...
This has to be one of the finest books I’ve ever had the honour to read. It is a supremely eloquent odyssey both into the mind and character of not only one of the world’s oldest civilisations (in India) but also a truly remarkable human being. What makes this work even more extraordinary is that it was penned whilst the author was in prison with apparently minimal access to research material. The sheer span of the book covering India’s history, Hinduism, jurisprudence the struggle for independence and more makes it close to a work of genius if not pure genius itself. It's not only a discovery of India but also a discovery of Jawarhalal Nehru a hugely underrated historical figure.

Discovery of India, Nehru
I read this book in my late teens and bought it to read again and I very rarely re-read books. I will also pass this onto my children to read as the book is I would say exceptionally outstanding. I learnt so much about India and its history. It is a totally invaluable asset and I am so pleased I was able to obtain such a good copy as I stuggled to find it in bookshops. In my opinion this book is an absolute delight.

Very dated book
This book is still relatively well known. It includes a lengthy summary of the history of India, and Nehru's views on the subject. Although some parts of the book are interesting, it is also very dated, and not really useful for the lay reader. There are better and more up to date books on the history and politics of India.Nehru was also overrated as a politician, he handled international politics very badly and the result was Tibet and the Sino-Indian war. His politics were also aptly criticized by Sita Ram Goel.Instead of this book I recommend the works of Arun Shourie, Will Durant (our oriental heritage), R.C. Majumdar and Koenraad Elst ("decolonizing the hindu mind").

Very Good Quality
I usually do not buy Penguin classic books because of pathetic paper quality and smudged printing - but this was an exception. Very good binding, very good cover, thick paper and great printing quality. Very happy with my purchase.

Worth Reading
Every Indian must read this book. It will make one realize what intellectual stature of Pt. Nehru was and how his thoughts and ideals shaped India to develop. Pt. Nehru was no angel but a human being, and "to err is human." However, he was not a crook, a liar or cheat, but a true patriot.

Fascinating Book
This book was recommended to me by an Indian coworker when I told him I was learning about India in my endless quest for understanding. I ordered it immediately and was so pleased when it arrived. I am now about halfway through it and have learned a great deal about India and her long history that I did not know. I am aware that Mr. Nehru was a Socialist, and although some may dismiss anything that is written by a Socialist as if he has nothing worthwhile to say I find that the book is very interesting, is full of history, and that Nehru was a very good writer. This book would be helpful to anyone seeking to learn about India.
