Grateful Dead: The Illustrated Trip Paperback – June 30, 2015

There are many different books on the Dead, offering perspectives from Phil and Bill, McNalley and Blair, Rosie McGee and many others. This is a great synthesis of these sources, cut up into small bites along a timeline for easy digestion. If you've got an empty place at the table, it makes for great mealtime reading or picture gazing. If you like this kind of thing, this is the kind of thing you're going to like.

Bought as a Father's Day present. It's a very thick, heavy, and packed with text and photos. Quite a lot of history on the Dead. I think you could spend all year reading this book and never get tired.

I'm glad I sprang for this. I though the price was a little high but this book is HUGE and packed with pictures and information. My dead head is going to love it!

Arrived earlier than expected. Deadhead eye candy extravaganza!

What can you say about an illustrated book about the Dead? It's fun, disjointed, fragmentary, but it fits perfectly with the Dead and their style of living and music-making. In the usual Dorling Kindersly style, this book contains lots of sidebars with illustrations all over the place. There's no narrative, other than time itself. The timeline, that is the thread through this book, moves from the earliest days to Jerry's death and beyond, covering the albums, important concerts, drug busts and all the other highlights of the Dead's career. If you are, or ever have been, a Deadhead, you'll want this book to leaf through while listening to live Dead shows.

It is very convoluted. Every page is full of colors and designs and it is kind of hard to read anything, but still a nice coffee table book for a deadhead.

Purchased this book for my boyfriend’s birthday. He’s a huge deadhead and absolutely loved it! He’s said it’s both informative and had great pictures/artwork. Definitely recommend for the deadhead in your life!

Another great book to add to my GD collection. This includes photos of my kids and friends from all those years ago. I am enjoying it.

Das Buch ist zwar nicht gerade günstig, aber man hat ein wirklich großformatiges und schweres Buch in der Hand. Und zwar eines, daß ein schon beim ersten Reinschauen einfach umhaut! Seite für Seite zieht sich eine kontinuierliche, mäandernde Zeitleiste durchs Buch, auf der jeder Konzerttermin eingetragen ist. Aber vor Allem ist jede Seite vollgepackt mit den jeweils relevanten (und auch weniger relevanten) Dead-Themen der jeweiligen Zeit, inklusive Dingen, von denen ich noch nie, oder nur in Ansätzen etwas gehört hatte (Alan Trist, Neal Cassady, Roots of the Bay Area Music Scene, The Bust at 710, Erläuterungen zu einzelnen Songs und Studioalben, The Sound of Oakland, Betty on Board, usw....). Und noch eine wirklich riesengroße Menge weiterer Informationen! Auch als zukünftiger, treuer 'Bibelleser' wird man niemals zu einem Ende kommen (können).....Und die Riesenmenge an Fotos kommt noch dazu!Es ergab sich nach Erhalt gleich eine schöne Möglichkeit, diese 'Bibel' zur 'Andacht' zu nutzen: nach einiger Zeit des Blätterns, landete mein Blick auf der Zeitleiste bei '1971-08-26 - Gaelic Park, Bronx, NY'. Da ich das Bootleg besitze, habe ich es gleich mal eingelegt und bei dieser göttlichen Musik, gleich ziemlich viel Zeit mit dem Buch verbracht (sollte ja nur 'erstes Reinschauen' sein)!Wie beende ich nun die Predigt? Hm... So, liebe Gemeinde. Obige Worte sind als klare Kaufempfehlung für wirkliche Dead-Fans gedacht. Hier in Deutschland also für alle Möchtegern -Deadheads, zu denen auch ich mich zähle.Wer nicht so ohne Weiteres knapp 30€ hinlegen will: von mir selbst ausgehend, ist die Annahme gerechtfertigt, daß der Großteil der Dead-Fans nicht mehr so jung ist. Wir sind also eher in einem Alter, in dem man sich über die Geburtstage nicht mehr freut. Falls mal wieder ein Geburtstag naht, nutzt vielleicht ein kleiner Hinweis an Partner/Freunde, daß dieses Buch die Lebensqualität wieder deutlich steigern kann! Vielleicht liegt es dann plötzlich einfach da....
