it is not wickedly funny, this is straight up Noir
First off ignore the promo blurbs, this is not Heathers meets American Psycho, it is not wickedly funny, this is straight up Noir. Don't think I laughed once, certainly didn't care. Two teenage girls distant for years reconnect and discover that despite some significant differences (Amanda doesn't feel, Lily buries everything under a future ladies-who-lunch exterior ) they bond over the belief that Lily's stepfather is a dick who neither would mind dead. Most refreshingly the plot unfolds in genuinely unforced, character driven ways. Gorgeously shot, anchored by five drop dead perfect performances, an awesome tense percussive score, and coming in at a brisk 132 minutes to counter it's somewhat arthouse pacing ( my only caveat, if you need fast editing and explosions to stay awake this is not your flick ) this is the most unreserved recommendation I can remember giving in a long time. SEE THIS!

fantastic and disturbing film well worth seeing
Completely amazing. One of the best films I've ever seen. Does a great job of making both its heroines seem sympathetic, while also exploring their darkest impulses and most horrifying fantasies. Carefully sets up the alarming yet inevitable conclusion.Expresses the righteous outrage that young women are entitled to in the face of domineering male and parental presences, while at the same time never suggesting their violent solution is correct or appropriate.Terrifying in all the best ways. Uncovers a hidden reality in the daily life of privileged suburbanites in an honest, unflinching and effective way.

Whoa!
By far the best script, acting, and direction about psychopaths I have ever seen. Many people will be offended by the honest, realistic depiction of sociopathic behavior unfolding. This movie elicited the emotions it was meant to, disturb viewers. Great work!

Waste of Time
This was just godawful. Not a comedy. Not a noir. I'm familiar with both and this film bears no resemblance to either. Moves with excruciating slowness, with endless pauses that I gather are supposed to be "arty". No, they just contribute to the general ennui of this project. Weird teenagers doing weird things, and adult characters who are just as tiresome. I never did get which girl was supposed to be the sociopath, and by the end I didn't much care. Having just seen Anya Taylor-Joy's stunning performance in "The Queen's Gambit", watching her in this turkey was disheartening. As for the acting? To paraphrase Dorothy Parker: the facial expressions run the gamut of emotions from A to B. An hour and a half I'll never get back - not to mention the price of the rental.

Not a comedy, noir all the way
If you're looking for comedy, even dark comedy, you won't find it here. I watched it primarily to see Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) and Anton Yelchin. Unfortunately his last performance does not do his acting talents justice. His part as a small-time crook is just sad and off-putting although his acting as usual is superb given the limits of the role. The story is absurd - a teenage girl is forced to kill a horse with a broken leg on her own? Two teenage girls plan the death of the stepfather of one of them but neither has a very good idea of how to go about it? WARNING: SPOILER AHEAD When the deed is finally done, circumstances are such that there would be forensic evidence that both girls were involved, not just one.Other reviewers have stated that the movie does not give sufficient motive for the stepdaughter's actions. If they had been paying attention, they would have noted that the stepfather was sending the stepdaughter to a boarding school for girls with severe behavioral problems, and later in the movie he tells her that after a year at that boarding school (when she would graduate high school), he will cut her off without a penny. Her mother, like all too many women, is so desperate to have a man support her in the style to which she has become accustomed, she does absolutely nothing to protect her daughter. The stepfather seems constantly filled with rage and about two seconds from punching the mother and the daughter. So yes, there is plenty of motive to get rid of him, but the method chosen is sloppy and any halfway competent police force would have figured out what happened. Guess we're supposed to suspend disbelief but sorry, I just don't buy it. The only reason it gets three stars instead of one is the presence of the two actors mentioned above.

A quiet, overlooked masterpiece
I purchased this movie based on what I saw in trailers. When I actually watched it the first time, however, I only found it to be mediocre. After a year or so, on a whim, I popped it into the DVD player, and for whatever reason this time I was completely engrossed the entire way through. Maybe I wasn't in the "right mood" for my first viewing, but I've watched this movie probably 12 times from start to finish in the last 6 months, and it never gets old, and only gets better. The writing, casting, acting, lighting, editing, and directing are all superb. Even the soundtrack is distinctly unique and offers a tone unlike any other movie I've seen. Anya Taylor-Joy is brilliant, and is Paul Sparks nails the jackass stepfather without being over-the-top. While not having much screen time, Anton Yelchin, in his final role, still stands out, and it's easy to see why his acting has been praised. But the real star is Olivia Cooke; the passive expressions of her benign(?) sociopathic character are mesmerizing and make rewatching this film a real treat.Props to Cory Finley for creating such powerful female characters, in a largely male-driven entertainment industry. This is currently in my top 10 favorite films.
