Doraemon Volume 2
I first bought volume 1 for my nephew (ordinary American kid who knows practically nothing about Japanese culture) when he was 4. After 2 years + indifference, he finally found it really fun. So I bought volume 2 for his 7th birthday and he carries the book wherever he goes. He is now telling me "I will save my money I earn from doing chores and I will buy rest of the series by myself!"

The Finest Collection of Early Doraemon Stories
Do you want to do something to change your loose lifestyle? (See SLOW AND QUICK). Or want to know who will be your future bride?(See Nobita's Bride). How about keeping a baby Hurricane as your pet? (See Huko, the Typhoon). You may sometimes want to call DORAEMON.The second volume of English-Japanese(or English-Chinese) Doraemon, titled THE GADGET CAT FROM THE FUTURE Volume 2 contains seventeen selected stories from Japanese-language original comics(Tentomushi Comics Vol.5 to 7). All of the stories selected indeed represent what makes Doraemon one of the most successful manga comics both in Japan and Asia. Although the selected stories in this volume were written in early 70s and it may contain some of the outdated fashion or fads but you can still enjoy each story a lot. And as you can see from comical SLOW AND QUICK and HIRARI MANTO introducing a cape device which turns away anything that comes ahead of you, Fujiko team have seen tremendous improvement in describing action, motion and pace than the earlier works. Not only Fujiko produces a lot of nice action comedies as seen in many of the stories but is also great at creating heartwarming stories such as HUKO, THE TYPHOON.As most of the Japanese comics translated into English, this children's comic reads from right to left just as reading a Japanese book. So you may need some time to get used to the Japanese comic style. Also the main purpose of this translation is for Japanese to learn colloquial expression in English, the expression used in this comic may not necessarily capture Americans who mainly read American-style comic books. Titles for the stories are too straight or direct as far as the English titles are concerned. The way the titles are given need to be more flexible to get the readers' attention.*English-Japanese or English-Chinese?In general, English-Chinese version is marketed with about half the price of those of English-Japanese version. If you are learner of Japanese language, make sure if the subtext is in Japanese before ordering. For general American comic fans, get either of the edition available because the English text is basically the same in either of the edition. The difference between English-Japanese and English-Chinese edition except subtext language can be found in title logo. Chinese subtext version uses Chinese Character for Doraemon while Japanese subtext version is simply using alphabet logo design.Verdict: Excellent stories but the titles could have been better.Rating: 94 out of 100Recommended for: Japanese children comics fans and for some fans of fantasy novels and films.
