Not a Mosquito Larvicide – Only Works on Crop Caterpillars
I ordered this expecting Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti), which is the strain used worldwide for controlling mosquito larvae in standing water. What I received is Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk), which is a completely different strain. • Btk is effective only against caterpillars (Lepidoptera) such as Helicoverpa, diamondback moth, cutworms, etc. • It does not work on mosquitoes, blackflies, or fungus gnats, since these insects don’t have the required midgut receptors for Btk toxins. • For mosquito control, you specifically need Bti formulations (brands like Vectobac, Aquabac, etc.). This product may be fine for farmers dealing with caterpillar infestations, but if you are looking for mosquito larvicidal activity, this is the wrong strain. The listing should clearly state Btk vs Bti so customers don’t get misled.
