Patterson's Miss? A Close Look at '12 Months to Live
"12 Months to Live" thrusts readers into the whirlwind life of Jane Smith, or as she's known in the Hamptons' elite circles, Jane Effing Smith. Renowned for her prowess as a criminal defence attorney, Jane's reputation precedes her in both the courtroom and the field of investigation. Her toughness and strength make her an indomitable force, especially as she embarks on defending a high-profile triple homicide case while simultaneously delving into a cold case filled with unsolved murders. However, Jane's life takes a dramatic turn with a terminal medical diagnosis, giving her a year to live, amplifying the stakes of her already dangerous situation. The book is lauded for its brisk pacing, thanks mainly to its short chapters that keep the narrative moving at a breakneck speed. The court scenes are particularly noteworthy for their sharpness and wit, capturing legal battles' tense and dynamic atmosphere. Jane Smith is a compelling protagonist whose strength and determination shine throughout the narrative, making her an easy character to root for.Despite these strengths, the book has its flaws. The subplot involving 'Jimmy' feels disconnected and challenging to engage with, which may leave readers detached and confused. Additionally, fans of James Patterson might find "12 Months to Live" a departure from his usual captivating storytelling, marking a rare miss in his bibliography for some."12 Months to Live" offers a gripping exploration of strength, resilience, and the fight against time. While it excels in delivering thrilling court scenes and a strong female lead, its sideline story might only resonate with some. Nonetheless, it remains a testament to Patterson's ability to weave intricate narratives that challenge and entertain.

New characters and narrative, but just didn't grab me the way I had hoped
I like these out-of-series books by Patterson and coauthors, as they establish new characters and plot mechanisms that don't fit in other series. This one, though, was a slightly mixed bag for me. I enjoyed the story and the narrative, which is different from most other Patterson books, but I found it not quite as gripping as some of his other books. It's still enjoyable, and a good read, but it just didn't grab me as much as I had hoped. Still, an interesting story to enjoy.
