Music Review of C,XOXO
After listening to the album entirely while working from home, I have to say I'm a little disappointed in two things. A) The premise that I LUV IT set for the tone of this album - I.e Dance, hyperpop (None of the other songs are the same on the album) and B) The overall messaging and marketing for this era, to me, seemingly contradicted in the last few weeks in interviews from Camilla before the album drop. But first I'll say I was never really a Camilla fan. I liked 5th harmony the girl band she was in and a few of their songs. Suspringsly their least successful album (after camilla left). But camilla as a solo artist had always been just another generic pop artist and none of her songs ever really stood out to me. (Bar the exception of b sides OMG ft. Quavo from her first album days) and to me that sounds hip hop/rnb/pop inspired, which she said she didn't like this song apparently and yet she's said she listened to drake while writing this album and the whole hip hop inspiration. (I'll get into this later). So this album to me doesn't flow cohesively as I would like. There are 4 interludes which angered me, as they were seemingly full tracks when camilla posted the track list to her Instagram. You WILL NOT GET THESE 4 SONGS -- Pink XOXO, UGGLY, KOSHI XOXO, and 305tilidie. They are interludes and rumour has it are full singles part of her deluxe album version. This is misleading, as I was not happy that it was 10 tracks in total, 3 of which were already released and most teased/performed in advance, so it felt like there was nothing "new" to look forward to on the album. In terms of the tracks the drake feature was highly publicised and I think is the least best song on the album. I'm not sure where the ugly interlude (which is just drake btw and was meant to be a outro to hot uptown), but changed to interlude instead), fits into the aesthetic of the album. I love dade county dreaming, but the best part about it is the features from young miami and JT. (Black hip hop female artists). Also the songs pretty when I cry, is the only one with a Latin vibe and chanel no. 5 although a beautiful ballad track, I think she's trying "too hard" to sound complex and was probably listening to, too much drake, as the lyrics although rhyming, when you look up, nobody understands what they are!Overall I feel let down by the amazing build up in marketing and camillas now look (blonde hair), but it didn't quite land for me, when the album was released. I felt if the consistency was hyperpop it might have worked. In hindsight it probably shouldn't have been released first and maybe more commercial friendly 'he knows ft. Lil Nas X'might have been better, as everyone seems to sleeping on it, which surprised me. I also think we had a rush and high and total shock with the new style from camilla with I LUV IT, so the other singles didn't seem to live it up to it or were almost a total come down, after the amazing video for the song, as well as its sound. And finally, the premise is the melting pot of making that inspired this album, yet the interview and songs on the album give me a touch of Latin vibes (pretty when I cry) and then the rest hip hop. I LUV IT is the only dance/ hypepop song, so I feel like it shouldn't have been on the album at all.I think this album made me notice camilla for sure. I'm not going to lie, I've been obsessed with this era, the performances and the visuals, but from a solid album review, but it doesn't quite hit the mark.

Not like her previous albums
If you are expecting a similar sound to her earlier albums, you will likely be disappointed. The sound is so different and to me, artificial. There are only 2 or 3 songs I can listen to. Check it out before you buy it. I didn't.
