As a new mitt it was a little stiff and the 7 year old had another glove that was more cushioned and softer so he prefers that glove but I told him it just needs a "little breaking in"--had to explain that to him!! Also he though the blue color to be strange until I showed him some of the baseball greats used color mitts too.
